Having experienced similar issues I have started sending everything on a "sign for" basis.

There have been stories of mail being intercepted on the way out from the UK but not sure what happened to the individuals concerned.

When people send you mail, have you reminded them to put - Mersin 10, Turkey - at the end of the address? That means it appears to be going to Turkey, but will then be sent on to Cyprus - bearing in mind TRNC is NOT recognised by anyone but Turkey. That said a lot of our mail never arrives, but a lot does.

International mail goes to Mount Pleasant Sorting Office in London... they profess that the mail goes on to Turkey.

After our first Xmas here, we told everyone not to bother sending any cards at all.

Very few manage to make it here for some reason or other.

Official looking mail, from banks etc seems to get through though.

Parcels are another thing.

Nobody seems to be able to resolve this problem.

Much better to have your mail sent/brought by people travelling between UK & TRNC.

I tell people to put everything in a brown envelope and mark "Card Only" and most gets through. Any parcel, no matter how small, or anything of importance, send and get sent "Signed for". I sent a "Signed for" letter on 17 Jan and it arrived at its destination yesterday 26th Jan. Better late than never.

I buy a lot of stuff on the internet, and the sellers all put that the parcels/letters have to be signed for, and they always arrive. I had 2 things go missing over the Christmas post, but both parcels had not put that they need to be signed for, so think that is the answer.

Groucho is correct.I once had mail from Nat West that had part of the address altered.Felt tip had been used to alter/erase Mersin 10.I took letter to my bank in uk.He confirmed all Nat West statements used Mount Pleasant.

After seven years I still have nothing but praise for all the postal services involved in delivering our mail: The Netherlands, Turkey and TRNC. We only did not receive one postcard - sent from France. All other mail (postcards, letters and parcels) were made available to pick up in Girne (at customs or from a mailbox). In the past months the Alsancak Post Office even delivers at our door. Well done and thank you!

Dutch, The fact that none of your mail passes through the offices at Mount Pleasant may be an indication of just where the mail goes missing. I have never lost a thing that has not been posted in the UK, but anything that is posted in the UK is very hit and miss indeed.

Now for total hearsay - I was told before I moved here that my mail would not get passed the London Greek Cyps who worked in the mail office, I never did belive it but then again who knows the whole story???

MMANUE,

Last year we got ourselves a PO Box at the Esentepe post office, managed by Ibrahim. Before that we were only receiving about 2/5 of our mail, and V&A items would go adrift. Since we have had the PO box all mail throughout 2010 has been regularly delivered and put in our box including such desirable as DVD's and electronic items like add-in cards for the PC. Ibrahim also advised us to have anything really valuable sent a recorded delivery, although not recorded at this end, he said it looks as though it is tracked in transit so the "peons" tend to leave it alone !

best regards

tonye

Yes I have had the same problem, I have been here for 18 mths and never received a letter, and I know the have been sent, one was sent recorded delivery but I never got it.

Maybe they are collecting the stamps for a Blue Peter appeal ?

RE msg 12, waddo: (...) Dutch, The fact that none of your mail passes through the offices at Mount Pleasant may be an indication of just where the mail goes missing. (...)

▶ We are talking about a very old problem in this thread. Even the BRS took some action to find out about this problem, but - reading the posts - it obviously wasn't succesful.

Years ago I offered a solution: send your mail to an address (was provided) in Holland and most probably your mail will be delivered in TRNC. My idea included NO extra postage for the UK senders.

Reactions: zero.

Complaints about mail delivery UK -> TRNC on C44: too many to count.

Too bad for you Brits.

I am NOT complaining.

Somewhere out there there is a Turk with 2 pocket diaries sent by our daughter from UK posted in early December. I hope they enjoy them!

Two of my Christmas cards sent here went straight back to UK to the sender!! Some gifts for my son never got here & they were sent in November. I agree with some of the other members better to pick them up yourself when you go back. You can't trust recorded delivery here.

Msg (17): We have no way of knowing what nationality is disrupting the mail.

I really wish one could get one's MP to start an investigation. As far as I know, tampering with mail is a prisonable offence.

It would be really useful for all of us if we could do some tests on the routing. The only issue is that any discussion on the board is very public.

Any ideas anybody or are you all prepared to be forced to pay far too much for mailing things.

How do you know - you could just have easily written 'a Brit'.

OK I see that there was an MP intervention back in 2009. Has anyone got any more information on how the issue was brought to the attention of the MP. We have a new government in the UK and I would like to see if something can be organised.

Clearly there is still a problem and it needs is an increase in profile - perhaps through the media.

If indeed it is a wanton act then it can be described as persecution/discrimination and violation of a really basic human right.

I sent important docs via international signed for service in early Jan. Arrived no problem within a week or so.

Always use the Mersin 10 address.
