TURKISH PM ERDOGAN SAYS ANKARA IS PURSUING AN ACTIVE POLICY ON CYPRUS ISSUE

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Ankara was pursuing an active policy to find a just, lasting and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem.

The Turkish Prime Minister said that a peaceful solution to the Cyprus Problem can be found by strengthening the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus politically and economically.

Speaking during a meeting of the Marmara Group Foundation, the Turkish Prime Minister said that Turkey was working actively towards achieving a lasting settlement to the Cyprus Problem.

Criticizing previous Turkish governments of failing to do enough to improve the status of the TRNC within the international community, Prime Minister Erdogan said that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was much better off today, both economically and politically, compared to the past.

Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot Side had adopted a stance in favor of solution, peace and compromise by voting in favor of the Annan Plan during the 2004 referendum, Mr. Erdogan reminded that the TRNC participated in the meetings of the Organization of Islamic Conference under an observer status with the title of ‘Turkish Cypriot State as expressed in the Annan Plan.

The Turkish Prime Minister also drew attention to the fact that the TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat had started holding important contacts in the United States as well as other European Union countries as the President of the Turkish Cypriot State.

Stating that the recent economic growth displayed by the TRNC was striking, Mr. Erdogan added that the economic assistance provided by Turkey was aimed at developing and improving the North Cyprus infrastructure, enabling the TRNC to stand on its own two feet.
