Bellapais Abbey exhibition hall adorned with fine works

Source: Cyprus Observer
25 November 2006

The North Cyprus Anglo Turkish Association staged its Annual Art and Handicrafts exhibition in the Bellapais Abbey display hall last week.

The former Abbey Undercroft was adorned with some glorious examples of local arts and crafts including carvings, quilting, cross stitch work, mouldings and clothing.

Amongst the many attractive displays, many of which were for sale, two pieces caught your correspondents eye; Sevcan Cerkez's ceramic sculpture of an old Cypriot couple is a remarkable piece of work that magically provides different sets of interpretations as one wanders around the angles; try and break away from it if you can, you will find the work will demand your attention for hours, a wonderful example of an artist "kidnapping" her patrons. At 900 YTL for the pair, a lucky buyer will be entranced by this work for years.

We don't know how many hours it took Wendy Davies to create her cross stitch picture "Friends in Waiting". Perhaps it took the 1,000 hours Cliff Dawes spent making his hand Made Glass Chess set. Whatever, it was worth the effort; it is a lovely colourful image on the eye which makes one wonder at the level of intricate skill employed to create such beauty. Should Wendy's works be for sale they, would be immediately snapped up, but it seems she creates these lovely pieces for her own pleasure, and why not?

Watch out for details of the next ATA Art and Handicrafts Show at Bellapais, it's well worth the trip up the hill. For more details on the North Cyprus Anglo Turkish Association, call 0542 852 0236 where you will be advised of membership, activities and a varied social calendar.
