Historic meeting between religious leaders in Cyprus

The Head of Religious Affairs Department Ahmet Yonluer and Archbishop Chrisostomos have agreed to promote respect for places of worship in all parts of the island, and to take practical steps towards encouraging the restoration of these places.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between the Head of Religious Affairs Department Ahmet Yonluer and Archbishop Chrisostomos who were brought together by Mr. Van den Linden at a joint meeting at the Ledra Palace yesterday.
The agreement was announced in a joint statement issued by the office of President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe- Rene van der Linden.
The statement said that both Mr Yonluer and Chrisostomos welcomed the initiative taken by Mr Van den Linden who brought them together for the first time.
In the statement it has been also stated that the meeting was held in a warm atmosphere where ways of creating more tolerance and confidence between two peoples and political leaders of the island were discussed.
Yonluer and Chrisostomos also agreed to meet again soon.
