Just seen a headline in the press - they think they've found Atlantis off the African coast. A couple of years ago,I read it was in mid Atlantic off the continental shelf, and before that somewhere in the med - as Greece in sinking now,so must have Atlantis. Here in Blackpool,we've had Riverdance last year, but Nelson's flagship,Fouderant was wrecked about 2 miles away in the 1890's and now I discover that there is a flooded village dated back to 1555 near where Riverdance was + remnants of a prehistoric forest. Everyone will be aware of the shipwreck in Kyrenia Castle;but wondered if anyone else knew of any other such maritime tales in TRNC or your local neck of the woods? (yes,BPF I am sad - but as you now see I do get out more) regards to all,Steve

steve1953. Heres an old maritime tale: A man appears before St. Peter at the pearly gates. "Have you ever done anything of particular merit?" St. Peter asks. "Well, I can think of one thing," the man offers. "I came upon a gang of macho pirates who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen. So I approached the largest, meanest, nastiest one. I smacked him on the head, knocked the parrot off his shoulder, ripped out his ear ring and threw it on the ground and told him, 'Leave her alone now or you'll answer to me.'" St. Peter was impressed. "When did this happen?" The man replies, "Just a couple of minutes ago..."

One of my neighbours goes diving with the Alagadi Scuba Club and theyve found a WW2 RAF Bomber on the sea bed further up the coast. It has been reported to the RAF in UK and the engine numbers are being traced to find out its ID, the circumstances surrounding its crash and to see whether it should be designated a war grave. An Interesting bit of history?

That plane is old. Have been there twice and the numbers were already transmitted by various diving schools years ago. Divers have found a gun, the cockpit, the engines, some stray parts and even seats. Acctually the legend says that the plane (it is not clear if it is a bomber - quite small engines) was trying to hit a rock which it thought to be a submarine or ship. If you swim to this rock which is on the left side of the plane wreck, you can see all the bullet holes and even bullets in the sand stone. Past Esentepe. The Rock looks like a ship heading west.. Could be this one: 35°26'27.07"N 33°54'55.11"O For a dive ask Tevfik @ Natilus Diving school: http://www.nautilusdivingcyp.com/

I know that there are dives to an ancient site at the momen but ist not open for the public. Its an old Agyptian shipwreck and they are stil working on. other ancient sites, well, the kyrenia shipwreck, very booring in my opineon, salamis with special permision I think.. Ask the local diving schools, the Tcs, they obtain much easier ancient site permits if needed. Good luck
