On leaving Ercan at the end of Jan the passport guy told me I have 'traffic violations' (2). He said it was 'no problem' I could pay them on my next visit. Just go to the police station with my passport and pay up.

Can anyone tell me how much they are likely to be? and whereabouts the police station is? Thanks

Maggie

M & B

Speeding fines are paid at Girne Police statuion near the market, go in main door and the desk is immediately on the right. We paid different amounts for the couple we have had, 1 was 142 lira and the other was 178 tl. Don't know why, distinct lack of info when asked, case of pay up and shove off.

Ouch! I'll certainly be much more careful in future - though I suspect one of them was my other half who drove the hire car some of the time!

Only just found out that the speed cameras don't flash at you!

Thanks for the info Mindy

Firstly when you go to the police station you will have to show id then ask for the traffic dept ,there they will look up the offences and ask you to declare who was driving. If you admit the offences they will issue a form for you to sign which details the fine and points depending on a sliding scale of excess speeds

You have 14 days to pay this or the fine doubles

The fine is payable at the left hand window as you leave

they cant put points on your uk licence

We always ask at the police station if we have any speeding fines after we have applied to renew our temp res. Two birds with one stone.

Batgirl Does this mean that as I've been back in UK for 6 weeks the fines will have doubled? Or is it 14 days from when you go into police station?

Maggie, the first fine of ours was actually for 1 August 2007 and we only found out at Metahan in October 2008 when we were about to cross over. It was our fault as we forgot to let the police know our change of address, but that fine was 142 TL. We asked if it included penalties and just received a shrug , so pass on that one. The second was in October and I beleive it was my nephew who was the culprit, that was higher at 178tl and don't know why but it is paid and hopefully no more.

Thanks for that Mindy - don't like this 'being a wanted woman' thing - I will go and cough up as soon as I get back and keep me head down in future! Actually that's maybe not the best idea - keep me speed down & me head up!!
