Does the forum think there is an argument for everyone to speak and be taught the same language?

What language should it be?

Would a global language help to further peace and harmony in the world

As much as it could help global peace and understanding, i think it would also ba a massive hinderance, other countries are very patriotic and would be rather p****d off if they found their own language was not the first language to be taught in their own country, and to be honest i don't really like this idea either. However, i do think a universal language, ie english/spanish maybe even chinese, should definately be taught as a second language.

Surely if everyone spoke the same language it would be much easier for people to move and work in different countries or to conduct trade with each other.

Too much animosity with being denied the chance of learning a language of origin would develop, therefore communication on a worldwide level would horribly compromised

DD Are you saying language is often seen as a badge of identity and more conflict may be created if the global community is seen to prefer one language over another?

Macha. If William Shatner can speak it then it's good enough for the rest of us. I say we should all start learning esperanto - before it's too late.

msg 7...yes i do..i think language does identify us...and i dont think that that indentification should be taken away...a second language would be preferable but not the be all and end all....

A universal language would be brilliant in terms of trade and perhaps education, but i for one would not volountarily give up my native tongue for the sake of trade!!

As ever No1 ... thought provoking... where do you get them all

2000 years ago there was a near universal language in Europe... Latin

2000 years later we have numerous modern languages all rooted in the same.

I agree with Daisyd... remember ten years ago the French tried to legislate anglicised words (eg O.K Coca Cola etc) out of their language because they felt they impugned too much. I do not know if it was successful though I do think French is a beautiful language.

If we ever had a one world language, could you imagine the accents

C'mon, why bother. With English, you can feel comfortable (almost) everywhere and get by in most situations.

joseph,

it didn't work at all - people still use words like week-end, bye, web-cam and so many.... because to replace them most of the time it is too long -

week-end : fin de semaine

bye : au revoir

web-cam : caméra-vidéo

Everyone in the world, by default, speaks English.

If they pretend not to understand,... just say it louder,... or shout!
