Turkish should be adopted as an official EU language and Turkish Cypriots should be invited to send their own representatives to the European Parliament

No. Yes - Cyprus is in the EU. Maybe it should be "Cypriot" that is the language of the Island so it could be an official EU language. There would be no reason why Turkish could not be an official language of the EU - just because it is also spoken in Turkey should not be a bar. Portugese is an offical EU language but it is also spoken in Brazil!

The EU have a 'Limit by Statute' as to the number of official languages allowed. The inclusion of Turkish, & Cypriot Turkish, would require the removal from the official list of the 2 other languages least spoken. Currently these are French and Gaelic!

Could chop Istanbul in half so those lucky ones on the European side would have representation but woe betide any one living in Asia Minor! Didn't Churchill try that one in 1914 but got no further than Canakkale? Bring back Esperanto, that would solve everyones problems! Richard

Let's face it,.. there is only one truly international language,.. English! If 'foreigners' pretend they don't understand it,... just speak louder,.. or shout!

Why remove two languages its only one, admit Turkish, this is the main derivative of the TC tongue. So get rid of Gaelic, who the hell speaks it anyway

According to the EU's policy on languages each country, before it joined, decided which language it wanted to have used as an official language for EU purposes. Being multilingual country does not mean you are allowed to bring all (even those which have official status WITHIN a member state) languages to the EU. IMO, supporting demand for inclusion of the Turkish language as one of the EU official languages, can be only based on the fact that it is one of the RoC official ones...well, to use this claim you should recognise the RoC as the only legal representative of all its people -GCs and TCs alike.

Keith Cheers. The thought of me doing a full blown Haka mid air over Turkey might just persuade the pilot to divert direct to Ercan! Good thinking except my 77 year old Mother might have other ideas and as to enamouring the trolley dollies It's a sure fire looser on that pick up approach! I'll stick to BahBahBabara! Richard

English is now THE international language for diplomacy, international air travel, business, IT, sport etc. It is an official language or second language in some 20%+ of countries of the world. It therefore makes it the prime candidate for being the common language in the EU and should be taught in all EU countries. This would save a fortune in our tax monies as the need for interpreters wouldbe much reduced.

I speak Gaelic (Scots) and so do many. There are now more learners of our language in Scotland than there are native speakers. Such is the power of the Scottish parliament giving equal status to this lovely & poetic language (the oldest spoken in Europe) that has been so long neglected. Yes, English is the international language and I, as an English teacher, both at home and abroad, am aware of this. It is taught in all EU countries as far as I know. Have done my best to teach it to Turkish, Arab as well as Scottish children and adults. I also learnt Turkish, and a smattering of Arabic, I have basic French and bit of German. It is a joy to learn another language.

Littlenige You can hardly compare minority languages in U.K with Turkish spoken in Cyprus for over 400 years by almost half the population.
