Did the UN green line suddenly before a "border" to the RoC? .. I think, not.... May be you mean - any issues heading north? ... I wouldn't expect any... Turkey decided to open the gates - thanks to a European Court of Human Rights case brought by a TC..... as long as TR is a member of the Council of Europe - it is EXTREMELY unlikely either "side" could close the crossing points for long.

Dee you may be proven correct, UBP are in now and they want the TRNC to be recognised will they start to regard the Green Line as "THE BORDER" between the two different states of Cyprus??

Dear Dee, re msg 8 I can only suggest a visit to an optician during your visit as: 1/ there is no "border" - just a UN designated crossing points across a cease fire line ;) 2/ There's plenty of Mosques to see - only 101 - of them - Dee told us there's none and would apologise if she was wrong... If you want to avoid 'em be sure to close your eyes if you visit Larnaca airport - don't look 1 km to the west / Larnaca town centre or Limas(s)ol old town.. Don't look to the right as you head down the Nicosia - Lima(s)sol Highway passing Kalvassos or look north as you approach the Souni turn off on the Limas(s)ol - Paphos ( Baf)section ..( Kantou) Don't look to the north as you approach the Avidimou turnoff or look south just before as you pass Paramali Could it be you are suffering "selective visionitis"... you could just admit you boobed.... ;) AGAIN...

RE msg 11, 6xm > 1/ there is no "border" < => Ha, ha, nice one, 6xm! I remember another board member, called MarkyMark, who used to tell the same joke at least a dozen times a week. Five years or so ago... But, granted, a good old joke remains a good old joke... PS. Tell us what the Greek writing news papers say today about the elections and the 5 out of 10 TC's who don't want to be sold to your friends on the dark side?

Dear Hans, re msg 12 1/ As you know MM stands for Markymark - I HAD to use MM and then 4 more to comply with the six character min rule of this board.. 2/ This MM still refers you to your very own govt Foreign Office web site - and it's policy re Cyprus ! ;P 3/ As it is a Holiday in "orthodox" Cyprus - you'll have to wait for the answer to Newspaper reports... and I'll have to quote the CY Mail - my Greek isn't up to the standard required to translate ! 4/ Which *is* "the dark side" ? I know that the Kyrenia district get less sun because of the mountain to the south.... ;) 5/ Do tell us - where the UN / EU refer to any "borders " in Cyprus and we'll be able to share your joke ! ;)

Juliet the point is that the BBC, Telegraph and New York Times all used the word border in their headlines. They do this not because they are stupid or ignorant of the facts. They do this because unlike MM they know and understand that the word border has a specific politcal and legal meaning AND it ALSO has a general every day common usage as well. This is something they clearly understand yet MM is unable to accept.

Dear Erolz, re msg 15/21 "the BBC, Telegraph and New York Times all used the word border in their headlines. " We were only discussing today with AJ how inaccurate the BBC reporting of Cyprus is.. ! Like I said, the UN / EU / UK all refer to it as a cease fire line / green line.. I'm SURE you can search the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office website .. re 19 , Soothsayer AJ will be regretting thinking you might not be a TC.. I know I'm in the minority on here.. but let's not kid ourselves.. if it's an international border - how many countries recognise "TRNC" as a "nation"...?

Hows this for a solution. We can all go across the BORDER whenever we want to go south. And all in the south can come across the CEASE FIRE LINE when coming to the north. See how simple it is!!!!!!!!

RE msg 24, Geoff > We can all go across the BORDER whenever we want to go south. And all in the south can come across the CEASE FIRE LINE when coming to the north. < => 1 : The government of the TRNC says it's a border - so IT IS a border. 2 : It's NOT enough to wave a white flag to enter TRNC from the South - you need a valid passport or other required document. So, again, IT IS a border. Even 6xm has to show some document at THE BORDER.

Dear DC, re msg 26 "the government of the TRNC says it's a border - so IT IS a border" Oh dear, Hans - but the ECHR say the effective control of "TRNC" is Turkey and who is the only country to recognise "TRNC"? .. I have to show photo ID to be able to go from N.I to to the mainland UK - does that mean I left the UK ;) Hans, there is a de facto situation in part of Cyprus.. it doesn't make it *de jure* ...

Dear oh dear, Must be 4 years on and still the same old same old boring dross being peddled by the same old boring people who think that corrupting a thread with their same old boring propaganda is clever. Still, I suppose with a keyboard to hide behind and unlimited time these people have nowt' better to do. It really is a shame when people check a thread like this one, to see if there is genuinely any glitches that might mar a (perhaps) important journey, to find these "burkes" splattering their claptrap into an otherwise useful space. Get a life. TonyE Ex-pat, Resident of the TRNC, living happily North of the Border.

Hi RobnJo re msg 34 Is your name Tony? Did you mention the word "propaganda" in the context of stating how things are in the eyes of the world outside /TR / "TRNC" concerning "nationhood" and "frontiers "? Now I explained "surreality" and perhaps you can explain how pointing out the above is "propaganda".. ? !

Dear Dee, re msg 38 "must be all this lovely sunshine." are you in the UK, then ? ;) .. our green grass has grown 10cm in two weeks.. re msg 39 Rob.. "surreality" is an adequate adjective to describe "TRNC"... from "buying" a property , gaining access to it, posting a letter, "visas" ...etc., I'm asking what is "propaganda( ish)" about reminding folk that the majority of flok on the island and outside it do not regard the UN cease fire line as a de jure national "frontier" ?

MM msg 22 and like I have shown Mark the BBC AND the Telegraph AND the New York Times all have no problem using the word border in articles relating to Cyprus. Not because they are ignorant of the legal status but because they are cognisant of the reality that the word has BOTH a specific technical legal / political meaning AND an everyday common usage meaning. As non partisan and non politcal organisations they clearly see using the word in this common usage non technical way as appropriate. Certainly political government departments like the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office have to take a different approach and they do - but NORMAL people do not NORMALY speak like a government department, they speak like normal people, as the respected news sites I have quoted do as well. Well most normal people that is

If people use the word border to make out that the TRNC is an internationaly recognised state then yes they are wrong. However what you seem incapable of accepting or understanding is that people, including the BBC, Telegraph and New York Times all use the word border to simply mean a boundry between two entities that have customs controls and passport contols. The word does not have to be a political statement. For you it is always a political statement and my point is that this is not true for many other people. It is just a word.

Dear ErolZ, ( eeeeeeeeeeek sorry, forgot.. your don't like "Dear" !) "If people use the word "border" to make out that the TRNC is an internationaly recognised state then yes they are wrong. " THANK YOU..... As you VERY well know - semantics - the wording of contracts/ agreements / legal documents is *everything*. Using the word "border" therefore implies ignorance or is making a ( wishful) political point... no ? I would put "customs" and and " passport" in the "dreaded" inverted commas as I'm into de jure rather than de facto .. As ever, I believe that thinking the "TRNC" is independent - a state -actually holds back the ability of TCs to have a real say in Cyprus - or outside. I fully acknowledge that they voted YES in April 2004 - and that it is the GCs that need to "soften" their attitude and follow ALL ECHR rulings..not just the one's that suit.

Dear Jack, re msg 46 "what a load of fuss about nothing" If you REALLY think that then you must either be selectively / deliberately missing the point - re the surreal "dividing line"- or hoping the Cy problem won't effect you.... Thanks for starting off an interesting thread.
