The Ozankoy bookshop will now be open 7 days a week. We sell UK newspapers on the same day of publication, they are delivered around 12 noon. We have local papers, UK, German and French papers and magazines and we can take orders. We are open 9.30 to 17.00. Of course we still have a very extensive and varied selection of books both new and second hand. Our exchange system is very popular and we give 2tl when you bring books in and it costs you 4tl to take them out.

We have a new paper craft group here held by Kath at Kyrenia Krafts beginning this Tuesday at 19.00, we also have a FUN dance/exercise group on Mondays and Thursday at 19.30. For more information please ring Barbara on 8152853

Thank you for your good wishes. Just to put the story straight. As a family we came to live in Ozankoy 14 years ago and opened the old B`s Hive Cafe, many of you I am sure will remember our scones, chicken and mushroom pies and our famous steak and Guiness pies which we also made for several other restaurants and bars. We were the first place to let people use the internet and there is at least one member of this forum who was first introduced to computers by us. We also sold books at that time so maybe we were the first bookshop! I think we were the first bar in Ozankoy to have an official drinks licence. Our other business of Property Management became more and more successful and the decision was made to give up the Cafe and the premises and just run an office in the village.

cont...... Just over 2 years ago we were offered two new units opposite Ozankoy mosque and decided to knock through and run the office from the upstairs gallery and downstairs as the Charmed Gift and bookshop. Necla and I went off to Istanbul to buy the giftware and came back to find Libby opening the Garden Bookshop. We put our books away again and just concentrated on the gift shop. The gift shop was closed after one year but the office was still in the same place. Libby and Alex and the family became friends with the children being practically joined at the hip. At the beginning of this year Libby came to us and said she was closing the Garden Bookshop as the place was damp (not good for books) and the rent had gone up dramatically. We then told her we had the chance of taking our old premises back and would she be interested in us pooling resources and relocating office, gifts and books over there.

cont...... Libby said yes, we would sort out a way of selling the books and gift together. We entered into negotiations with the landlord and signed the contract in January this year and began the major clean up operation needed. Libby then told us that she had a full time job at the travel agency and would not be joining us. We decided to carry on and offered Libby the chance to sell her books through our shop. She eventually decided to carry on selling her stock from the restaurant. We opened in April and have concentrated on the exchange system with many fiction books now in stock. We do have some new books with some more on the way but Libby still has a large selection of local knowledge books and in fact our first customer was sent to the Garden Bookshop and we continue to send those customers there when we have not got what they want. Surely it can only be to the good of everyone if Ozankoy is the place to come for your books.

I would also like to wish Barbara every success. There is nothing better than competition (as you can see from the number of restaurants in the village) and as she says it will be wonderful if Ozankoy becomes known for books as well as food.

Just to add a small point in case it deters anyone renting our former bookshop, it is certainly not damp, indeed you could happily live in it, being a typical Cypriot underdwelling. Also we said we were moving from the shop to the bar not because the rent was going up, purely because of the level of the rent, coupled with a downturn in new book sales because of Amazon etc. People think we should sell new books at the same price as Amazon and take no account of transporting them here!! I am afraid turnover and profit (or lack of it) were the sole determining factors in my decision. Similarly after Barbara's very kind offer of renting space in her shop I looked very carefully at the figures and decided that there was no way we could make a profit

cont...

After discussions with Libby the final decisions were mine as they were totally financial.

The Five Fingers continues happily on its way as it has since the sixties when Rauf Denktash was a regular!!

We look forward to seeing friends old and new.

Cheers

Alex
