Nice little piece in Rev Walkers page Cyprus Today.

When you try and speak the language.

Ordering eggs on toast in Lapta coffee shop:

"Iki"<2> eggs ON toast.

He got ten pieces of toast

When on one holiday in Turkey, was having a coffee awaiting a dolmus.

The waiter said something,I thought was "have you finished?"

I tried to say finished "bitis"

He thought I was German, and was saying"do you want another one?"

And he took my reply to be "bitter"German-please.

It took a few extra coffees and missed dolmus to leave the cafe.

Anyone got amusing stories, misuse of language?

Mike,

Years and years ago, I was on a cheap holiday in Mallorca with a friend, and we'd stopped for refreshment at a little cafe.

We finished our cokes, and showing off, I tried for the bill "La cuenta, por favor" - in a no doubt appalling Yorkshire accent...

The waiter brought two more cokes...

Half an hour later, after a few more attempts, when we were absolutely awash with coke, my pal intervened and said "Excuse me, could we have the bill please?"

The waiter replied, in flawless English "Of course, - certainly Sir"

Personally I think that he was taking the p**s, but I've never lived it down!

Keith.
