I have learnt today that GC taxi drivers have gone on strike at Larnaca Airport and have blockaded all approach roads to the airport. Can anyone else confirm?

Cyprus taxi drivers stage strike

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE 21.JUL.09

Hundreds of commuters and tourists have been left stranded as taxi drivers went on strike due to a dispute about competition to their services.

Taxi Drivers Association leader Andreas Georgiou warned that the airport would be closed to all taxis and mini-buses dropping off passengers.

The taxi drivers are protesting against illegal taxis and are demanding better facilities at the new airport, which opens in November.

we are in democracy - why shouldn't peoàple come and pick up their relatives or friends - illegal taxis do exist everywhere in the world ! you take or not at your own risk !!!

msg 5, the tc's picking up family and friends wouldnt be getting a lift from a gc driver anyway! so it doesnt affect gc business does it? GC drivers are biting the hand of the tourists in the south that feed them! just crazy,i can understand a little if there are illegal taxi's in the south, serving the tourists in the south.

They seem to charge the same rate as aircraft.

Now they are complaining that the new buses are taking bread out of their babies’ mouths.

I guess if you were paying thousands for a taxi licence and saw folk circumventing the rules you would all lie back and do nothing ?!

Less biz to go around and more "competition"...

Dear Cyprusaursoft

re msg 11

I believe you might be TRYING to be "witty" regarding my Wife's waiting for UK residency?! Just to let you know - it cost nothing...zilch..!

A Visa to visit Cyprus also ( currently) costs nothing for a Russian citizen, and esp one married to an EU national when resident in a third EU nation.

Should we choose to visit "TRNC" via Ercan - we would pay nought, also..

Perhaps you refer to travelling to Russia?!
