It's allready here. Paid it last April. Catalkoy Belediyesi increase your annual rates by 25% if you have a pool. I think it's 1TL per square meter of your property plus 25% for the pool. (e.g. 200sq.mt villa with pool =250TL) Pete.

Property rates should be increased by 100% minimum for those who insist having a pool while Cyprus and its ordinary people face critical water shortage. These people are in the same camp as those who thoughtlessly hose down pavements and driveways. Spot fines should also be imposed on those wasting water.

There are uses for water which some will find acceptable, others not. Water used for pools/gardens could be regulated by only allowing only so much per month per pool/garden. A ration/allocation might be the way to go. To quote a 100% tax on pools is to pull a random figure out of thin air, IMO, and not really based on anything. However, the hosing down of pavements and driveways is clearly a total waste of water, again IMO, and penalties for this should be imposed. However, I doubt it will cut any ice with non-expats as they seem to have connections in places that give them the impression that water conservation doesn't apply to them.

I don't think I was moaning Hippo. Merely adding my tuppence worth to a debate. As it happens I do have a pool, water supplied at a premium cost from a De-salination plant. No effect on the precious water table and a clear conscience (apart from the environmental issues that are easily mitigated). Just because it is inconvenient to worry about the huge quantity of water used by the lucky few with swimming pools, doesn't make the issue go away.

problem is people who fill pools in high season without buying in water from bowser i always do this and do all the run off things to save water. i dont feel guilty cos i have a pool as i know i am not abusing it. washing cars hosing paths etc thats a discgrace and its not just expats doing it. have a yearly tax on pool owners and fine for litter and wasting water. this year going to collect rain water clean it keep it and add it for my first couple of pool balance tank fills thats pretty eco aint it
