Hi all

Firstly I hope everyone is having a great time out in TRNC wherever you are ?

I am going out in September for about my 15th visit to this lovely island, unfortunately only for a couple of weeks but thinking about a long term let (3-12 months) through some of the ads on this site but would like any info regarding the cost of healthcare whilst out there being as it is not in the EU ?

I am on regular medication & obviously before I make plans for a long term let would need to consider everything before I look at these lets.

Being as a lot of people on these forums have either got places out there or travel frequently to TRNC I thought I would ask you knowledgeable people what sort of costs are involved & about anything else I may need to consider ?

Many thanks for any help / info and would be most appreciated.

Kindest regards

Keith

It really depends what type of medication you are on. Some things are much cheaper here, and some more expensive. A lot of the things that you have to get on prescription in England, you can get over the counter here.

If your GP becomes aware that you are out of the UK for more than 6 months, then he must rule you ineligible for further treatment on the NHS or in the EU via your E111 or equiv

Even within that period health insurance normally excludes pre-existing conditions, so you are looking at using TRNC emergency services and State or private hospitals should the need arise suddenly, making return to the UK for treatment

impossible

But the cost of drugs is low, State hospitals provide free/cheap treatment, specialists from Turkey visit TRNC often and there are also hospitals in the South if the particular treatment that you require is not immediately available in the North

Bear in mind that State hospitals in TRNC do not provide the QUITE the same facilities as in UK, families are expected to help look after dietary and hygiene matters, but they'll keep you alive!

Have no fear on that score

You will find info on medical treatment in TRNC here: http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/medical.asp

Many thanks guys

The meds I am on are blood pressure & statins for cholesterol so should be able to get these well in advance if I decide to go on a long term let in the winter months.

Thanks keithcaley for the links as I can browse at my own leisure and therefore get as much info before proceeding to look for long lets.

I am going out in September to the Pia Bella & will obviously travel around the island looking as well as browsing anyone advertising their properties.

I was last out in NC in May 2008 and infrastructure even then was improving upon the mid nineties the first time I traveled.

Kind regards

Knightrider if you are on Crestor then they are expensive here. Try to get them before you come. But Lipitor etc are quite cheap here. cheaper than perscription . Do as Keith says and ask your GP for 3 months if now possible. xx I pay 26 euros a month for Crestor xx

My GP says it illegal for him to give more than 1 months prescription, I asked him if he he would prescrible for 3 months if I wanted to go to NC for a long stay, in the end he said he would do it once only.

My husband is on Lipitor and pays 40 tl per month for those, but his blood pressure tabs are only 2.5 tl per month. The pharmacist in Karakum only charges us for the Lipitor, fair play.

Hi ginty

Sorry for delay in my reply but have been busy over the weekend. I haven't looked into the insurance side of things as we are covered for multi-trip insurance through being a Barclays additions plus account holder although will need to check whether this will cover me for more than 45 days as you stipulated ?

I am on Lipitor & Atenolol and my doctor would give me at least a 3 month supple of both so hopefully will not have to purchase whilst out there.

We will be arriving at the Pia Bella around 20:00 so hope to see you there & my name is John, my son is doing my research for me

Many thanks for all the info & look forward to getting out there.

Kind regards

John

Atenolol is also very cheap to buy here. A months worth costs around 5TL (£2).

Hi Paul

Many thanks for the info.

That is cheap!! If for any reason my doctors will not prescribe long term as previous posts have mentioned then at least I know I can purchase both relatively cheap when out there.

My wife is on Simvorstatin so hopefully that is reasonably priced ?

Kind regards
