I have trawled the 'Border Crossing' topics and can't find the answer I am looking for.

If you have bought a car in the TRNC, what are the requirements for you to drive the car south across the border?

Thanks in advance,

DG.

Register the car with the Police (small office before Insurance booths), show them your valid Insurance cover for the South, EU Driving Licence and your log book.

When you cross over you have to buy GC Insurance, think it is now 17 Euro per month, at booths just past passport control.

Get you police registration which lasts for one year.

You can use either UK licence or TRNC driving licence, the insurers sometimes ask for passport if you use TRNC licence.

Last time we went the police at passport control asked if I had insurance, as I did not they kept passports until I got the insurance.

Thanks ttoli,

as far as 'valid insurance' is concerned, can you tell me if that is available from the north or is it something you have to obtain elsewhere. I take it the 'log book' is the cars registration document.

Thanks again,

DG.

The Valid insurance is that, that you buy from the little Insurance booths just past the border (Now 17 euros a month i think), they do take credit and debit cards.

Yes, the Log book is the cars registration document(What we know as the V5) from the North (Normally a hand written document).

Dependant on the Official on Duty when you first cross they may make a big song and dance about it and hold onto your passport, until you've got Insurance cover and registered your car, then you go back the 10-15 feet and reclaim your passport(No doubt in retaliation for the grief that Our side give to GC cars).Personally I smile and let them enjoy their little game.

I dont think "our side" give GC registered cars any grief. My friends who live in Pa thos come over regularly with no problems fromTRNC officers. When I have been with them the only agro has been from GC officers, when they are going back home, over how many cigarettes they have bought!!

Please remember that if it is your first time crossing North to South, or you need to renew your Greek Cypriot Road Tax, that the booth that issues the Road tax Document is CLOSED on a weekend. It is only open Monday to Friday. You will be turned around and sent back if you can't this document and also you can't get insurance either.

The insurance booths, should youı decide to pay monthiy, quarterly, half yearly, or yearly are open till very late and usually one is 24 hours. There are 3 or 4 insurance companies. All offer the smae policy terms and conditions. All charge the same.

The other point worth remembering, is that the only place to get GC "Road Tax/MOT" is at the Metahan crossing, and they close the office at 1400. The document is free and lasts for 12 months. Once you have it, you can buy insurance at any of the crossings.
