Yes there is a charge in most cases. If you take your blue / pink book it is cheaper. However I personally think it is not that expensive.

The state hospitals normally seem to treat accident and emergency things free but normal stays in hospital have to be paid for. The prices that they charge are now the same whether you are a Cypriot or a foreigner which is an improvement on past pricing structures. As a for instance, a friend of mine recently spent 9 days in Lefkosa hospital. The price, including an orthopaedic operation on her leg was about 1200TL and this included a private room. Have to say though that, although the medical treatment from the doctors was excellent, the standards of nursing and general care were dreadful. The nurses were generally rude and unhelpful. Her ortho specialist asked them several times to give her a call bell as she was flat on her back and couldn't move, but they wouldn't do this. The bed linen wasn't changed during her entire stay. I have had experience of Girne Private Hospital and Etik in Lefkosa and their standards were very high by comparison.

Nostradamus, In defence of the nurses here they only do what they are trained to do, as is the same in most European hospitals. The caring side is left to the family, and the changing of the bed linen is included in that which is unfortunate. This is one of the reasons we took over TRNC Healthcare, so that in situations like that of your friend we could arrange for carers to go in and assist / train the members of the family / public how to do this type of work. As to the nurses being rude there is no excuse as civility costs nothing.

In our experience, the doctors at Lefkosa State Hospital were tremendous - the rest of it was a third world 'filth pit'!

I was gobsmacked when seeing the nursing staff puffing away on cigarettes behind the nurses station in Lefkosia.

Message 6 I remember when nurses could and did smoke in the wards in the UK! Agree it looked awful though. Also the nurses here were woolly cardigans, lots of make up and jewellery dangerous if a patient grabs the nurse by the chain or earrings But until someone teaches them different it is going to be this way forever.!!

Johnylee Yes I am sure nurses are human beings, at least I was I when I last looked, but come on, lead by example. As nurseawful said, wearing heavy make-up and jewellery and sat there with a ciggy in your mouth hardly fills one with confidence. True it is the correct training that is needed. education and common sense.

I find the local Girne Hospital to be very helpful and very reasonable, and not the waiting around like the UK Hospitals 3/4 hours
