Referring to an earlier thread, my friendly bank manager assures me that she knows nothing about any withdrawal of 'new' currencies on 4th December. So, if it was a rumour, squash it now! The old currencyis of course no longer valid, but maybe taken to a bank, but take heart - no need to dig up the floorboards, you cna keep your money there knowing it will be valid until you get around to spending it.

Probably, but my mate didn't even know about that. Are you sure it is not 'old' coins. But as I said earlier, I never get hold of any! So, no probs.

Msg 1 So you are saying that the article that appeared on page 9 of Cyprus today on Wed 2nd is in fact untrue? "That all the YTL coins are being withdrawn on the 31st Dec2009." Cassius

Sorry further to my response Msg 4 These are the coins with YTL "Yeni Túrk Lirasi" written on them. These are the ones I am led to believe are being withdrawn and will be no longer legal tender in 2010 Cassius

From January 1st 2010 the 'old' coins - 5 kurus, 25 kurus, 50 kurus and 1 lira - will be discontinued in North Cyprus. They have 'Yeni Turk Lirasi' and these coins will not be used any longer. We are changing the coins in my place of work as we speak. The banks are changing the coins for you. So collect all ya old coins and get 'em changed :D

it will be the same as the money before the YTL. It will be the main bank of Cyprus that will change them in the future.( Maybe they won't change coins though only notes. ) Although some of these coins will still be floating about they probably want to get as many taken out of circulation as possible. Although some banks have stated they will not accept after 4th they are still legal tender until 31/12/09 just like it was before. Notification was given at the beginning of the year that the YTL will cease at year end. It's probably worth trying to use then up before the end of the year and at least not accept any coins after as they may not be easy to get rid of.

i went to Turkbank at about 12.30pm today and was told that they wont accept the "old" coins and that i would have to take them to the central bank in Lefkosa. The shops I've been in today said they would still accept them, and i paid with them no problems.

Usual C**kup here. Sounds like this is just a Turkbank U.D.I. - shutting the doors early. I have no doubt that the coins will not be valid after 31/12/09 anywhere. Typical that Turkbank would bring this date forward. I'm sure it will be easy to change banknotes at banks next year, but not so with coins. I'm amazed that one poster on this thread had 100 x 1 TL Yeni coins. That's £40 worth. It must be a man. Leave all the coins at home because they weigh down your pockets & keep changing yet more notes.

Got rid of my 12 liras worth of old coins only to be given more in my change at Lemar, can see what will happen, the shops will continue to give them to you (difficult to spot when mixed in with new ones)rather than themselves take them to the bank, then will not accept them close to the shut off date
