I have read several threads about this topic and all have been very helpful. (Thanks for the template DC!)

All say that one goes to the court to witness it and register it there. But does one have to go to a court local to where one owns property? There would seem to be no need to do so as an address is not required on the Will itself, except for the witnesses.

I ask as our witnesses live on the other side of the island, and it seems only right that we go to the court nearest to their home.

You know how it is here, to assume there is no requirement as to which court to go to could be a big mistake !

TIA

We went to the court with our solicitors clerk, don't think you need a specific witness. But this was three to four years ago, things may have changed. Maybe best to ring any solicitor who should advise you.

Thanks geronimo, but its the location not the process for which I seek clarification.

Perhaps I did not make clear, sorry, that we are using the HBPG template and doing it ourselves, as we have done with most of the other buying procedures. Not only do we now understand it all much better, but apart from saving payments to lawyers and completing things much quicker, we have seen how they milk those who trust it all to them ! Therefore we do not have any links to a lawyer (no solicitors in TRNC) who would tell us without payment. On a scale of rocket science it really rates a 1 out of 10. So should be easy enough to do. If no one else can help then we will take pot luck and go to the court near our friends and see what happens.

'I ask as our witnesses live on the other side of the island'

I am hoping you are not referring to the south? or are you referring to the other side of the TRNC?

I, personally, would think only about registering your will in the TRNC under TRNC laws. At least, should anything happen, then you KNOW you are covered with your will.

Would registering your will in the south not be similar to registering your will in UK? No use at all? I really don't know the answer but HBPG may well be able to clarify this for you, for free!

Just get hold of two able bodies who are able to sign there names and go to the court office in Girne.

It is only for them to verify you have signed.

Your will is stored in the court office and you are given a receipt for it. So in reallity it is probably best at court nearest home if it is ever going to be needed.

Do not forget stamps to the appropriate values, was 6tl and 27tl when we did ours but will have gone up since then.

Also just to confirm, it is one will per person.

Thanks.

All my posts are in the context of TRNC, only an idiot would get the two mixed up.

Other side of the island is other side of the island, but south is south.

Cyprusishome thanks. Yes appreciate its one Will each, isn't that the case anywhere? I don't think location of the court matters as when the fateful day comes, it will be handled by one of the family who will have to travel to visit the island anyway, and all major centres are about the same distance from the airport.

Thanks all, thread closed.
