Can anyone, please tell me the Turkish name of butternut squash & where I can buy it...... Been told many times it's kabak, but it's not. Balakgi (sp) is something I have been given. Thanks & this is not Martin-wbh, he has been kind enough to let me use his email. Thanks....Linda

Butternut = akceviz (ak means white/light coloured, ceviz means walnut so perhaps this means some kind of nut)

Squash = kabak, kabak also means pumpkin, marrow, courgette and gourd.

Put them together to get Akceviz kabağı. However, Turkish is not always as straightforward as that and the two words together could mean something completely different!

Have never seen them in the North(so perhaps no translation required) but they are available in the South. Have you thought about printing off a picture of a butternut squash? Might be easier.

When I look that up it says pumpkin but it also means pumpkin head, blockhead and dolt so be careful how you use it

They do sell out here but its known as pumpkin and about 6 times the size of what we know in the UK. Saw them in Starling about a month ago, but they are huge.

I have bought them on the Wednesday market - from a stall at the bottom end of the market near the cafes. They sell them cut into manageable slices too.

Also in plentiful supply at the open air greengrocer by Botanica on the main Çatalköy road just before the new Tempo . I bought one and saved the seeds for spring planting.
