Can you use picture hooks on our internal walls or do they just knock out all the paint and brickwork and you end up with a great ugly chip out of the wall? Is is drill, rawplugs and nails you have to use ?

Drill etc - yes!! though I have seen the claw hooks used on light items, the ones where there are about 6 little nails coming out of a small circle, but havent seen any for sale here. the ones I saw came from UK. We were given one to try and it went in with a hammer blow quite well - but Ive only put something relatively light on it.

Hi LostFound,

Drill, rawplugs and screws are the safest bet.

Check for pipes, cables etc before drilling

Re msg 2, the claw hooks are available here, though with three small metal spikes which penetrate the local internal plaster/render just fine. The hook itself is plastic, and fine for photos and fairly small pictures, but I wouldn't hang a large mirror off them - unless you want seven years bad luck!

For heavy stuff use the wallplugs and rings/hooks but the claw hooks are around at most of the Yapi markets and DIY stores if you ask.

I use the small white plastic hooks with four pin size nails incorporated within the unit. They hold heavy, large paintings and can be found at the frame shop in Tin Pan Alley.

Hi

Quicker, easier is a tool called a Hilti. Your plaster/cement won't chip and you get hooks of varying sizes in the box. Sorry I can't say where to get it here in the north, but I know you can get it in good hardware shops in the south.

The Hard Wall Hangers (picture hooks) are available in two sizes from Zihni the Builders Merchant in Lapta his shop is Oksa Tikaret is near the post office & Ataturk statue; his phone number is 0392 821 1182 or 0533 860 2577.

He has a few hundred in stock and I think might even be distributing them to other shops.

NN Msg 8 - A Hilti gun to hang a few pictures sounds extreme

FH Msg 9 - I know they work and require the simple technology called a hammer. Are they expensive they are quite cheap in the UK. They sound like the same things that RB mentions in Msg 7

I have given up on wallplugs, instead I now use wooden wedges.I find them to be the strongest and safest way to hang anything on the walls here.

Just drill the wall, cut a bit of wedge, gently hummer it in and use either screw or nail.

At least now,we dont have to duck when we walk under something thats hanging on the wall.

if your only hanging a small light picture i find using silicone to be the best way and it just peels off the wall if you want to move it

Just goes to show how poor I've been over the last two years, no more Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams trips for me as the recession takes it toll! If you can hang on until early March I'll bring a bag load of them back for you from the UK.

The nails that come with the white plastic bit for a cable go into my stone wall perfectly well. They are the only nails I've found that don't bend, or make chunks fall out of the wall. I only get the drill out if it's something very heavy, like a large picture or mirror.

No more nails adhesive Stick a small piece if wood to hang the picture off only had one fail and does not damage the wall
