Wondered if anyone knows if there is a set format for Tenancy Agreements in TRNC (similar to AST's in Britain) - has anyone got a copy of one as have just committed to a small flat to let out in Girne to students and would like to do this correctly if possible ? I understand about taxes etc..

No matter what you write in your contract, if the tenant decides to take you for a ride, he/she can stay there absolutely free of charge for a couple of years. It is a very prolonged business to get out a naughty tenant through courts. At least make sure that someone who is not a man of straw stands as surety. ismet

I have heard numerous stories along lines of Ismet's comments. People pay first month's rent and that is your lot!!!!!! Squatters rights here are same or worse than UK and you can end up loosing the lot. Just read all the stories of contracts on house purchase etc, say no more. There are proportionatly more good stories but take great care.

I have heard stories of people renting out there apartments then things go wrong with tennants , and yes it can be years before you get you're apartment back , what i am assuming in North Cyprus is that there is just court action , which in reality can take years to sort out , what with all of the cost's including interpreters , makes the mind boggle .

Ok thanks for all that info. Just thought giving them an agreement would make it more formal. Anyway if they wont budge you can always send in the heavies! Sure they dont have squatters rights in TRNC! It couldn't possibly be like the namby pamby state we currently live in where you cant breathe if its not politically correct - I think we all know where I am referring to!! No doubt have opened up a can of worms there! But surely none of you would have relocated to TRNC if you had not lost faith in the UK ? And bearing in mind we are hoping to move out there in September for good, can anyone tell me if they made the right/wrong move ?

Pipie, I can state categorically that at the moment the court provides the English-Turkish interpreter free of charge. It is up to the advocate to ask the court to provide such interpreter when his services are required. ismet

Ismet, Is this the case with foreign nationals as well as Turks and Turkish Cypriots, or do foreign nationals come under a different heading as far as defrauding people goes, I seem to remember reading somewhere about a Brit who was deported for non payment

Alison, It is the same law for everybody. Nobody can be deported for non-payment of debts but unfortunately sometimes legally not correct actions do take place i.e. Kurds from Anatolia sought after by police there are deported at weekends where the courts of TRNC are not available for an injunction. This happened time after time. There is a campaign to amend the tenancy law and only a few days ago I heard on TV that some areas were taken out of control of the law or they were going to do so. These areas were a) the harbour in Girne, Dereboyu road in Nicosia (the main street where Califorian restaurant is) and within the walled city of Famagusta. So they made a start. ismet
