visitor visa for Syria

Can anyone tell me how to get a visa for visiting Syria. The passport is UK and the airport of departure is Larnaca. I have been told that you cannot get on the plane in Larnaca which is going to Damascus without having a valid visa in your passport. But a tourist office here in TRNC told me I would get my visa on arrival at Damascus airport. Does anyone know the correct procedure?

This is not an easy one as in the 90s I was told that you must get the visa from your country of origin that means that you need to get the visa in the UK
