Thankfully I've not needed to know about this until now. Can anyone advise? My hubby was on antidepressants some time ago and feels he needs them again but you can't get what he was taking in any pharmacy here and the ones we've spoken to say they're not available anywhere here. I sent a friend to the dark side and they're not available there either. We've decided he needs to see a doctor and get a fresh prescription. Do we need to register with doctors here, someone told me 'no', you just walk in to any one. Can anyone recommend a doctor and what are the costs here to see a doctor? Thanks.

I had call to see a doctor when we were over on holiday last year. I went along to the health centre at Esentepe, it cost 8TL for a consultation and the Doctor was very friendly and spoke very good English. He sent me to the hospital in Girne to have X Rays for which I had to pay 10TL. So all in all extortionate. LOL John

This is only an *indication* when you see a specialist: my heart surgeon in Lefkoşa charges me 80 TL for a complete check up (half an hour), including his use of state of the art American equipment. Recently I went to an eye doctor (sorry, tehre's a better word but I forgot how to spell it: something like ophto-etc) and he charged me 70 TL for an examination including a prescription for new reading glasses. P.S. The eye doctor is NOT the lady in Girne who seems to find cataract in every eye she examines and than advises you to have treatment in her clinic. Hmm. Make up your own mind - I found an eye doctor who said the cataract in my eyes was hardly visible and might only need treatment in 7 tot 10 years...

Re: Msg 4, In English it is "ophtalmologist" actually, from Greek "ophtalmos" - eye. And I wish too I could speak Dutch!

Clarissa2: I give up on this word - when even British people give me a different spelling... "Eye doctor" it is for me from now on...

Re: Msg7 Dear DC, Please don't. This is the correct spelling. And you can always call "eye doctor" an optician!

The standard fee to see a doctor is 70 or 80 lira, unless it's an emergency and you got to the general hospital

New Years Day 2009 at the Girne hospital I was charged all of 10tl. For that I got an english speaking doctor a senior nurse and a goafer, for half an hour. If it cost that in the UK I wouldnt bother with health insurance!

I think there was a piece in Cyprus Today recently about Aydin Eczane (Chemist) in Alsancak who are now able to order medication from the UK for you, could be worth a try!

I am sure I have read that you cannot buy antidepressants over the counter in the TRNC. I have read on another site that even a trip to the doctors will result in being asked to go to see a phsyciatrist before any medication will be prescribed. The butlers wife

Thanks everyone. His prescription for these didn't come from the UK, they were given to him in the Middle East some time ago - while we were there we stocked up to make sure we didn't have to try our own NHS (sorry no confidence left in our own GP, who enjoys nothing more than a good old chat about your latest holidays - or his!) and since the tablets were so cheap there... He's tried to cut back on them gradually over the past three months or so but has got to a point where now he's off them, he feels like he needs to be back on them. Viscious circle! Thanks for all the information about the docs here, we can only give 'em a try and see what happens. By the way, if anyone's interested, an optician is just the ordinary guy who's qualified to do you an eye test and prescribe your glasses to correct your vision. If you need to have more serious treatment, you'd go to an ophthalmologist who's spent more years qualifiying to become a surgeon - he's the one who can operate on you!
