How can such an amount of money be justified. This is what cash strapped Man United are about to offer Wayne Rooney to stay at the club,

Paul.

Maybe he is Maybe he isn't Bill but one things for sure, if he doesn't get it at Man U somone else will give it to him.

I agree with Paul that it can't realisticly be justified but it is the nature of the business. The game of football is no longer controlled financially by the supporters and local business advertising so unfortunately they will have no say in it.

I personally think they should bring in wages and transfer capping as they did in the US with major sports but they just find other ways around that.

It may seem a lot but it's a fixed wage. He doesn't get paid time and a half if they go into extra time. Would you work under those terms?

So young Wayne could earn £150,000 a week at Manu subject to 50% tax and National insurance or €250,000 at Real Madrid subject to 10% tax.

Paul, you ask how can it be justified? I ask who to? bviously the board of Man United feel comfortable that in today's market a player of his quality can demand such fees. Frankly for it to happen it doesn't need to be justified to anyone else.

When David Beckham went to Real Madrid, the increase in advertising revenue paid his and two of his team mates wages. If anyone disagrees with the wages being paid, they should make a note of the sponsors and shun their products.

This is what happens when a club with loads of money offer silly wages to secure players. but what happens when the arabs and russians come with money to throw around, and buy clubs, your so called stars can start and demand silly money knowing that some one will pay them.

Man U were the one to start all of this when they basically held the biggest cheque book, and when the arabs bought Man City they started bleating about large silly transfer deals, what goes around comes around.

Sadly all this will do is kill off the small clubs b ecause they will have to settle for the players that the top clubs don,t want

My club, Leeds, aren't a small club and they have players nobody wants. Word is that Beckford is being shipped to Real Santos, and all the rest to Fray Bentos. The Don and Billy must be turning in their urns.

If joe cole does go to city for GBP 200,000 a week its a bargin. 4get about how he plays but in financial terms it's cheap ie Not having to pay a transfer fee or signing on fee. When you thing an England player sells for at least 15 million b4 you pay him any wages. Just one way of looking at it

All in yes, still cheap ish for a top class player, just ask our Utd friends about massive transfer fees and then big wages ontop of that. We did experience that with our Brazilian friend also. Image rights and shirts do create massive revenue though. Madrid say they have paid off the transfer fee 4 Ronaldo in shirt sales already.

In perspective football players being paid astronomical sums . lets take into consideration how many fans they entertain week in week out. This game of football is now a globalised brand . they the footballers entertain billions of people each week . In comparison to rock stars and film stars who may I add earn similar fees why shouldnt our footballers earn similar amounts. ? Salary caps never believed in them and i never will.
