Now that the ash problem seems to be dissipating, I'd like to ask all the regulars this simple question. My wife, a Chinese national, and I will be flying from Stanstead to Ercan in August.

I believe the plane lands at Istanbul, but you don't get off. Does that mean you don't enter Turkey, and therefore don't need a visa?

Then on landing at Ercan, are there immigration officials there? Do we need a visa for TRNC in this case?

Thanks to those who reply.

Rottolover,

My son is coming in June to Ercan with his fiancee and she holds a Thai passport, we have been told that she just needs a paper visa like the one you get at Ercan there are no problems getting in.

You don't need a visa for Turkey unless you exit the airport. At Ercan you can fill in a visa: Name, passport number and nationality. This gives you permission th stay for 90 days. It costs nothing.

Ian - I have checked with the tourist office.

1] Chinese National

2] Chinese passport

Neither are a problem.

In theory in Istanbul as long as you do not try to go from transit areas Emmy should not have a problem in Turkey (If you are staying on the aircraft her & your documents might be checked while on the ground but that should not prove a problem.)

Thanks Tom.

Can you remind me of the best date for us to arrive in London? Somewhere around Aug 12 or 13?
