A few weeks ago we went to the bar down at the beach (not sure of the name just 5mins drive from square at Karsiyaka heading towards Guzelyurt. there are two bars and one of them has just been renovated, so we went there and the owner was charming. When we came out the bar next door was empty and the owner was just stood looking out at all next doors' customers, we did go there last year so we felt guilty and this weekend we went there. He had a few more customers but we were the only Brits appart from a couple who were with a TC obviously being shown property etc, We ordered a glass of wine and an Efes. Everybody else had nuts with their drinks so when we ordered another round I asked for nuts. he bought some in a little dish. the bill came to 26YTL 6YTL(each glass) for the smallest wine you have ever seen 10YTL for 2 Efes (pretty standard) and 3YTL for the dried up peanuts in the small dish. (which are usually free)Not the money....blatant discrimination once again. So when I told

him he was being unfair and nobody else charges for nuts and that everybody got them with drinks except us, he just shrugged his shoulders, so I said not coming here again...so he just said okay!!! Wonder why he had no customers, just another shortsighted bar owner

| We always use this bar and watch the sunset,we have found them to be very nice.and if we order nuts from the strip hanging up,as you would back home in a bar,we pay for them too..unless they leave a dish on the bar itself one would expect to pay.!! You get very little for nothing now-a-days and if thats what people are after stay at the places that are giving things away FREE..my God we all wonder how most of these places are making a living anyway..Stop winging over a such small stuff...... | I have no problem with either bar, having said that i must agree that the owner of the newly renovated bar is most courteous, and has obviously invested recently so good luck to him. I have no reason to complain about Club Guzelyali but would say that if your comments regarding charging for nuts and the owners 'couldnt care less' attitude towards you are true; then this is rather short sighted of him. After all is said and done, both bars have the same beautiful view, similar food at similar prices, so you would think the owners would realise that the level of service is paramount in order to succed. Especially given that as with many 'new' bars and restaurants in the TRNC, the novelty factor will wear off soon and as a result both bars will hopefully do well enough to survive. PS P, your daughter is taking full advantage of her day off! |

we were in there on Sunday lunch time, did not have nuts, but so what. Owner was very polite and courteous, food nice and reasonably prices and we have no complaints.

Why would you expect free peanuts ? Do they dish out free peanuts at pubs & bars in the UK ? Drink prices have been driven down to an excessive low in the TRNC due to tight brits, how are establishments supposed to survive on such miserly prices & profit margins ? The price of a large efes is 4tl in most village cafes yet people expect to pay the same rates in Kyrenia which is the most expensive part of the TRNC... Have some thought for business owners or drink at home in the future...

Heres the basics - large Efes cost price just under 2tl / retailing at 4tl = a grand profit of 2tl Now you have 4tl in the till, 2tl you spend on buying another bottle of beer to put in you fridge an the other 2tl goes towards, rent, rates, staff, electricity, water, wear & tear, business tax, accountants fees, national insurance, entertainment, petrol, telephone, stock and so on and so on total roughly 60000tl per annum running costs..... Equals 30000 bottle of Efes per year 576 bottles (24 cases) per week just to break even IMPOSSIBLE ! on top of that free peanuts !

Paul Went into a busy pub and attracted the barmaid for service by calling her nurse, she asked. "Why did you call me nurse?" I answered wisely, " Because they make me feel better"! Richard

Just remember if there are snacks for free in dishes put on the bar for all customers, how many actually wash their hands after having visted the loo. Mega horrible bacteria in there. Hard for bar owners, do they or don't they. Excuse me, but I would rather pay for the sealed pack. It is really nice that the bar owners put out snacks for customers but one of your party could be the one who does not wash their hands afrer visiting the loo. MMMMMM which one are you!!!

Brinsley The topic is about someone moaning that they have been charged for peanuts & feeling discriminated against so I don't understand what point you are trying to make here. The figures are above so working out the gross is not rocket science, gross profit is not the issue and does not mean much, foot flow & quality of custom is the issue alongside high running costs & customers constantly wanting more for less anyone in business or that has been in business on this island would tell you the same. You can sit down and calculate GP, NP, PM, BE points, projections and plans untill the cows come home if your prices are at such a low & quality custom is scarce you have'nt got a chance in hell... Try not to sound so intimidating in your future posts, you gave me the impression you was talking down to me infact almost ordering me to answer your meaningless question which i found offensive... So have some more respect. Ozi

Stonehousepub. 'Quality custom' Just how arrogant can you get? Sounds like an establishment to avoid if it is still in business!

Vincent Stonehouse actuallys says 'quality OF custom'. By his use of the word 'quality', I don't think that he is referring to the type of individual visiting his establishment, rather the amount that the customer spends e.g. Is it someone who just pops in for a quick pint or stays for a few drinks and a bite to eat. Give the guy a break, he is just trying to make a living in a very competitive business sector. Paul

The point I was trying to make, was not so much about getting free nuts, it was just the fact that everybody else in the bar got nuts with their drinks as a matter of course, we were the only Brits Everytime they served someone with drinks, they bought a tray with drinks and a small dish of nuts, So when we ordered our second lot of drinks I jokingly said to him .....where are our nuts,? he went and got us some, and he included them on the bill. The bill came to 26YTL for 2 x Efes (Bottle) 2 very very small glasses of wine and a handful of nuts Once again I am making the point that it is discrimination once again !!! His prices were more expensive, but nobody is going to argue about the odd lira, It is the principal

daffodils. Hi. It is obvious that this establishment only wants local custom and expats should keep away. We will keep our 'quality custom' for places that make us welcome !!

Daf If you genuinely feel you was discriminated against because you are a brit then thats fair enough. Just can't understand how you know that you were the only customers that got charged for peanuts.. As Paul says give the place a wide berth in the future Ozi

msg 21 Vincent1 "QUALITY OF CUSTOM" not "QUALITY OF CUSTOMERS" Means customers that drink well & drink big, whiskies, brandies & vodkas etc, high spenders. Or maybe a regular that may down 6 or more pints of lager in one sitting, without these customers it is very difficult to achieve good cash flow. This can by no means be branded as arrogance and is not in anyway aimed at any particular type of person. Ozi

Im still not clear as to which place this is. I know the venue but has 2 Restaurants, is this the one linked to the Guzelyali Hotel, the first one as you come down from Karsiyaka? I always go there and have great service but have never been offered any nuts though! The other one has always been a local place I was informed it was something to do with the Beledeyi so I always gave it a wide berth. Grateful to know which one as both needed refurbishment when I was last out.

ang1706, The first you come to is the one linked to hotel, the second is Karsiyaka Spor Kolubu. We always use the second one, it is not locals only just a very popular place that locals prefer, especially on a sunday when the families turn out en masse to use the beach and was always a Piknic Restaurant, not sure now it has been renovated. We have been when the cars are parked 3 deep it is so busy. To me, a good sign. The Guzelyali has in the past had an excellent reputation as a fish restaurant and not specifically as a bar for that reason it may be the people who apparently got free nuts were having or going to have a meal. I know of people who go and spend all afternoon over their meal on a week end.

We haven't used Guzelyali this year yet, but last year the service and food was good, and it had my vote for the cleanest toilets.
