I went to a beach the other day and was dismayed at the mess left by others. Whilst I was walking along the beach I saw a carrier bag, so I filled it up and took it home and put it in the street bin. Then I thought if everyone did that the beaches would clean up quite quickly. So I have put some of the 3million carrier bags given to me here in the back of the car and I will do that everytime I visit a beach. So come on!!!!!!!! How many more of you are prepared to do this - It is such a lovely place lets do our share to keep it lovely.

What upsets me is when at the weekend (barbecue time) in such lovley areas beach and mountain the amount of rubbish left behind is astounding , why not have signs up with 500 tl fines for anyone leaving rubbish behind and have these areas patroled and make on the spot fines to the people who apparetly dont give a dam.

i like the idea of the fines - maybe someone local can put this to the powers-that-be. So long as ALL nationalities are fined and not selected ones.

Maybe if everyone cleared all of them carrier bags out of their cupboards, filled them and then put them in the bins we would have a much cleaner countryside - Remember the 'Keep Britain Tidy' campaign's they worked didn't they. I also used a carrier bag on my hand to ensure that I did not touch any of the items directly.

the other thing to consider is our children and pets on these beaches. I encouraged my grandsons to help me pick up the rubbish and put them it in the bin. So now they are very litter conscious and condemn others when they see litter which is great considering they are 5 & 8.

Always take bags with us and have also seen people leave litter laying around once they leave and have gone after them and given them a bag to use, if we all did this and not let the get away with it.things would improve give it a go, just hand a bag to them and ask them to take it home, it worked for me although with a funny look from them they did oblige )) Spider,X

I know what you mean. I was walking up a main street in the UK and it is cleaned every day by a fella on a little sit on machine, so the council do their job. As I walked behind a group of women one of them threw a pack on the floor which looked like the tray and paper from Fish & Chips (there was a bin to the left of her). So I picked it up and stopped her and said, 'excuse me, I think you dropped this' (as if it was an accident) and she looked stunned and then thanked me.

also it is a great way to teach kids how to look after their environment. they will then do it automatically when they use the beaches and other areas - My 2 grandsons aged 5 & 8 always complain about the mess and they clean it up and put it in the bag when they find it, especially floating in the sea because there is no problems with cleanliness. They got loads of plastic out of the sea at Turtle Beach last week. If they find anything messy they call Grandma to sort it out.

Hildysmith, Beware!! Although the children helping with the clean up is laudable under normal circumstances, there are hidden dangers. Many needles are now turning up on the beaches..

I always get my kids to fill a carrier bag of rubbish when we go to the beach. If any of them manage to bag a syringe, condom and a tampax they get a prize of 5ytl. Admittedly my wife and I should clean up after ourselves but what do you expect when we've been drinking all afternoon.

hattikins, he was trying to be humourous, you might not have liked it but I thought it was funny. Two different opinions but which of us is correct, I'd wager we would disagree on that too. Cleaning up the beaches and other aresas is a great idea, not too sure I would want my children doing it without my supervision but the idea is good and for BillyB, thanks for the smile I got. Paul

Paul I do know it was an attempt at humour, just that I didn't find it funny, still, whatever floats your boat.

sorry hattikins, I suppose I felt it was unnescessary to call a humourous comment pathetic, shameful crap just because it wasn't to your taste. Maybe its me at fault. Maybe I should start becomming more british expat and complain about nigh everything in the strongest possible way in a public manner yet do very little about it when it is needed to actually do instead of moan. Not really pointed at anyone in particular but if the hat fits, wear it and then bitch about the colour I suppose. Paul (Founder member of the SWAGPAC party)

| hattikins, try reading my post again please. I have ended up in too many arguementative back to backs to make a personal comment. I even said it wasn't pointed at anyone so how can it be personal, I also said it might be my fault. Just like many others on this forum you made the error of reading the post with a negative mind rather than with your neutral eyes. If I wanted to get personal I could have asked what gives you the right to criticise somone else for their attempt to lighten the mood and state that "people here" did you ask them all, and then to follow up with "we can all have our own opinion" after you clearly berated someone else for the same thing. I will say sorry again to you personally hattikins because I do seem to be having a go at you personally, it is not my intent, you unfortunately are just the first person I have had the opurtunity to try and get my point across through. | As a teacher I have oft found that it sometimes it takes a bit of humour to get the message through people may not remember/ or may not wish to remember the original message but they remember the joke That does not matter so long as the message is received. With regards to the children - we do it together. Also we caught what was floating in the sea and it could be clearly seen what the items were - mainly plastic bags and strips of plastic. I preferred that they swam in the sea once these items had been removed. |

HildySmith good point. Last year we were collecting rubbish and I was in the sea retrieving floating carrier bags as I'm told the turtles think these are jelly fish. I didn't want to wear my glasses in the sea and unfortunately grabbed a jelly fish by mistake thinking it was a carrier bag! Once my wife and children had finished laughing at my extremely painful mistake I pleaded with them to urinate on my stinging arm which they all took as a once in a life time opportunity! I also noted when out for a walk on the aligadi beaches that a lovely big tree trunk drift wood has been removed, which I would of loved for my own garden but too big to move. Next to the hole was JCB tracks on following these, they go to the end of the beach and up the newish path to the car park, smashing many of the curb stones. A few days later I was at the restuarant ( I had the turtle & oleander soup, very nice)at the main aligadi beach, they have the tree trunk there, I wish they'd put the curbs stones back
