Not sure where it is Paul.

I was reading that the number of people crossing at Ledra has fallen and fallen. After the initial enthusiasm and curiosity numbers have dwindled.

Kato Pyrgos is a very out of the way village after Pomos Point in the South. In order to get to it you need to go through the mountains as there is a small village in the south which is "out of bounds" to everyone except the millitary.

The expected next crossing is in te north. As you drive from Guzelyurt towards west you come to Xeros. You drive farther to the west and you get to the village Yesilirmak where they are famous for strawberries and that is the border. Once this crossing is opened, it will shorten the way to Polis and Paphos. This will greatly benefit Greek Cypriots living in the area and wishing to get to Nicosia.

The village Karen is referring to is Erenkoy. This is the place where many Turkish Cypriot students studying in Turkey cut short their studies and landed here clandestinely and put up a resistance to to Greek Cypriot forces succesfully before 1974. It is a very small enclave under the control of TRNC. Memorials are held every year in the village here where many Turkish Cypriots had fought and had fallen. It is now an army outpost and is supplied by the sea. I had the opportunity to inspect the facilities there a couple of years ago. They get their power supply from diesel generators and solar power. I was particularly fascinated by the mechanical means used without electronics to make the solar panels rotate towards the sun for greater efficiency.

Can you not get there from the sea?

Cyprusunday : (...) Can you not get there from the sea? (...)

Do you mean Erenköy? If so, you can get there from the sea, but you're not allowed to do so by the (Turkish/Turkish Cypriot) military. And only once a year (Remembrance Day) the GC's allow former TC inhabitants and family members of fallen TC fighters to enter Erenköy by road - under the supervision of UN troops. Guests are taken there that day by the T/TC navy.

Might be a shorter route to Polis but the road past Yesilmerk is a single track.

Did the trek one day as far as the military base and some major work would be needed.

It's possible to swim from Limnitis/Yesilirmak to Pyrgos on the other side.
