Just been down the new road to karpaz from tatlisu this morning, amazing,so much quicker, and it sort of follows the old coast road but with alot less bends and curves.Nice quick road also. When fully finished,1 hour from tatlisu to karpaz or maybe less.

RE msg 1, zerochlor: I'm still very, very sorry that the old coastal road is now almost inaccessible. That road is at least 2000 years old and on several places you can still see where the Romans cut the rocks to make their road. On your left one could see small, old Roman harbours. If one stopped there - I'm obviously less in a hurry than you are - one could find pieces of Roman and Byzantine pottery. Dreaming about what may have happened there was inevitable - i.e. for me. The scenery on the old Roman coastal road was breathtaking. It's gone and now we can all race to the Karpaz. One more fine road in the Karpaz and we can check how many hours and minutes it takes to drive there and back to Girne. Just what tourists need, eh? "Sustainable tourism" - when I read that from the mouth of TRNC tourism officials it makes me laugh. I guess it's called progress, eh, Zerochlor? :-( Kind regards, DC.

We went to that beach a couple of weeks ago, the signposts for Famagusta are a little misleading, they seem to point in the wrong direction !! However, the new road from Kantara to Kaplica is fantastic.

DC. i know what you mean, and yes i suppose its a shame about the old road, but as you know maybe better than most,it was also a dangerous road in the night time and even in the day . But now its going to make those parts which people could not be botherd to go to now more accessable, generating incomes also for the people who have sat there for many years waiting for some thing like this to happen. But even from the new road,as it does almost follow the old road, you can maybe still see some of the sites your talking about,if you know where to look. progress, yes your correct indeed.

RE msg 8, zerochlor: I'm not against progress. I'm against the way TRNC ignores the past of this part of the island - believe me, there's much more wrongly done or not done at all than you imagine. I've never met anyone (resident or tourist) who didn't enjoy "the old coastal road". It was a tourist attraction. Was. And that is what I'm sorry about.

DC. what they have done with the new road, they have put off lanes from the new road down to the old road,i used both new and old road today when i was looking for some thing. The old road can not be done away with,as to many homes are next to the old road,so i suppose there may well be 2 routes, old and new! quick and slow!

New roads provide access for more building development and usually in previously unspoilt areas of NC. Just look what has happened since the new road was built 4/5 years ago to Esenteppe and beyond. The new road from Yeni Erinkoy to Dipkarpaz is now opening up to development in what I thought was designated a National Park. Also there will be no old road - just a wide highway engulfed in construction traffic. 5 years ago the road east from Accupulco was a narrow lane hugging the contours of the coast - fantastic for tourists with beautiful scenery and and unspoilt beaches but not accessable for builders traffic. But I guess with the embargoes the Government has few options for generating cash and whilst the residential property market is depressed there seems to be plenty of Turkish cash to invest in Hotels and Universities. I am sure it will not be long before we see the first of many casino hotels in the Karpaz and maybe even in Kaplica.

DC..I know exactly what you mean. There has been an Old olive tree, opposite the water tank, for hundreds of years. It had been split by lightening and survived and when my sons Father and Grandfather herded their goats there more than 50 years ago, they used to stop there and have their lunch in the shade of the tree. It became a kind of 'thing to do' that each time we went out that way with visitors we would stop and take a picture of my son and whoever was with us. So we have many photos of My son and his Dad, brothers, step brothers, grandparents, friends etc. When we drove there in June I thought I had lost the plot...until I realised the tree had gone. Ripped up during the road widening. I cannot begin to tell you how amazingly sad I felt. Yes I know its only a tree, and NC has changed so much and we are to blame for that, but for me this tolled the death bell for the Old Karpaz.

RE msg 19, zerochlor: (...) Why would a greek need any compo, they living happy in the south and athens! (...) => Just for the record, so you don't have to research it (not your forte): people in the South are usually Greek speaking Cypriots (Greek Cypriots if you so wish to call them) and not Greeks. You guessed it: Greeks originate from Greece.

Sounds ideallic Dave ! perhaps some humanitarian, consiencious developer, will buy the land there for almost bugger all and build some unsightly slums selling for a rediculous price knowing the poor purchasers will never be able to own their property, hold them to ransome, then threaten them with Turkish mafia ! READY ..... "here we go again ! appy as can be ! we've all bin done in the jolly old TRNC ! " regards Barry
