Hi all, I am doing some Art Psychotherapy work at the Leonard Cheshire Home in Girne, there is a young man there who is completely deaf, i was wondering if there is anyone in the North who has sign language??? I do not know too much about the subject?? but told Dr Ali that i would ask if there is anyone out there who may be able to help??? is there a universal version of signing??? the young man is Turkish and is at present locked in his silent world, will be grateful for any help Thanks Blondie35

Hi Blondie until you find someone with a sign language certificate to help this man, in the meantime make available pictures of every day foods, activities, outings . etc . posted on a wall and in the form of a scrap book. Offer the pictures in the hopes he will point to a choice . Hope this helps .

Hi The language you want is called Makaton. It starts very simply with teaching a sign for basics such as toilet, tea, nurse etc and can be progressed to quite complex signing. I only know the basics but you can get books, videos etc. When I did my carers` course years ago Turkey was the only country that would not teach Makaton so you would have to source from UK where it was begun.

makaton is the one done by pictures, Bliss is by simbols the one you need is BSL - this uses 2 hands, American sign uses just one most of the Turkish who sign have learnt BSL. I too have the booklet somewhere, and di do BSL in Uk for many years, that about 12 years ago so I am rusty. As far as I am aware you can download the alphabet (BSL) from the internet. Sue
