They see each other day and night - sometimes the Buffer Zone in walled Nicosia is only a couple of metres wide - but they don't shoot at each other anymore... However, from two very reliable sources I was told that the young soldiers on both sides of the Buffer Zone throw stones at each other instead... So the UN Blue Berets keep an open eye on both sides along the Buffer Zone...

Bloody hell Hans the pictures that you are posting from the Buffer zone are amazing. How did you manage to get access, and take these fabulous photos?

RE msg 2, Blackbird: the pictures were made by my Dutch friend and colleague Bo de Visser (a professional photo journalist). He left TRNC a week ago and is now working in Berlin at the abandoned Tempelhof airport, that's why I take care of editing and uploading the pictures.

We were given access to (last year) Nicosia International Airport and (this year) the UN Buffer Zone after a request to the right UN people. I must praise the UN (everywhere, but especially in Cyprus) for the polite and friendly cooperation they always offer professional journalists.

RE msg 6, Blackbird: Yes, Bo de Visser and I went together. When I was still active for the paper in Holland we did a lot of work together and all over the world. Although I am now more or less retired we are still very good friends and still like to do some work like in the old days!

P.S. Are you from Llangollen in Mid-Wales (if I remember the area correctly)? A beautiful area where I once did some excellent trout fishing in a wonderful stream (being a guest of the Wales Tourist Board was not bad at all!).

Re msg 7. Hans you are really lucky to have gone to these places in the Buffer zone - and once again many thanks for the pictures, and please pass on my thanks to Bo de Vissser.

I live just outside Llangollen, which is in North Wales - but I guess there must be some trout here....
