Very interesting

Bulgaria and Romania were two of the most corrupt countries prior to joining the EU, however the EU loosened it's joining criteria for these two countries, but not so for Turkey.

There may be a correlation between how much people trust each other in their own countries and their GDP per head. Scandinavians have a high trust for their fellow countrymen and women.

Thanks for prompting me to check out that link, 'Stonehousepub', I'm much obliged to you - as you can see, New Zealand is the LEAST corrupt country in the world!

Probably the printer thought Cyprus insignificant enough not to put a dark red dot!

Mark,

"I find it interesting the Eire is now regarded as less corrupt then the UK"

Interesting, but probably untrue. A lot will come out shortly about the complicity between government politicians and (now bankrupt) developers. Corruption and incompetence.

Interesting that Iceland is 11th in the table - probably because they have charged senior politicians of involvement in their financial catastrophe.

The rteports are probably based on the "reported" corruption levels. You would be very surprised at the real level of corruption that goes on without being reported in many EU countries including GB!

Ukraine has got to be purple on this map as far as Europe is concerned it is one of the worst. Both major political parties are as bad as each other and there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

Worldwise on the map Pakistan isn't on the bottom colour they should be a negative figure amongst all others.

Grouch

Anyone that has lived and worked in Singapore knows how corrupt it is. But it works for the people. If you want to discuss politics with locals it has to be done behind closed doors and in whispers. I have many a story to tell about my time in Singapore but I dare not tell because the Secret Police might want to take an interest in me.

Of course GB is corrupt ! Politicians and councillors are usually in it for an ego trip.

look at the expenses scandal.

Look at Coleman in London. A fat arrogant shit taking backhanders whilst giving the fireman a hard time.

And then there are the bankers and city slickers who got us into the mess we're in but seem to have escaped punishment while we pay the price - and still getting hefty bonuses !

And then there are the large companies who fiddle or "fail" to pay their corporation tax plus the fat cat bosses who are awarded large pay rises while staff are made redundant and wages frozen.

And the tax evaders or avoiders and the non doms.

Corrupt? UK ? Naah !!!

And as for moral corruption - Paisley in that other corrupt little expensive state who preached sectarianism and hatred for 6 decades and is now in the house of lords. With a couple of his cronies who did likewise.

Corrupt? Only TRNC seems to be corrupt in many eyes!!!

And then there's the Saville report !?

When we talk about corruption in all it's forms, we, in the UK are a bit more subtle...

Peter Mandelsonn was thrown out of the Commons for not declaring a £300,000 loan to buy his house.

after four years swimming in the EU gravy boat, he now OWNS a £3.5 million pound house in Holland Park, nice work if you can get it !!!

Tony Blair is paid between £.5m and £2.5m a year "consultancy " fees by the American bank J.P. Morgan, that is in charge of the financial reconstruction of Iraq. ( i.e. J.P. Morgan lends money to Iraq to rebuild the country after Bush and Blair bombed it.)

littlejohn;

I agree whole heartedly! But you left out the corrupt police force and Customs & Excise officials! I could tell you stories that would shock you! At one time (whilst in England) I decided to keep a record of Police and Customs corruption for a year or more. It got to a point where I got fed up with the high number of events and gave up saying "sod it! - this will go on forever!". I still have the newspaper cuttings, filling up a thick dossier...

Thje Western world could show them all how it's done, they invented it along with concentration camps and eviction of Jews for "usery". Edward Longshanks ,King of England, expelled them all. United States tested L.S.D on their own soldiers, prisoners of mentally ill patients, unbeknown to the victims of course. Read "Mind Manipulators".

That's a bit harsh bringing in Edward Longshanks. Clearly he was a nasty bastard (from what I saw in Braveheart), but bringing in some of these historical events, denies that an individual or country has the ability to grow and mature. Britain has evolved and will likely continue to do so (although regressions do happen).

Clearly from the other posts the UK still has some way to go to clean up it's act. The new UK bribery law is coming in to play. I know allot of bushinesses rely on good will gestures to win business, however these are going to be stamped out. I am not sure it is a good idea (or even practical) to banish reciprocity, however it is happening.

At the end of the day bribery will never be totally eradicated, not in my lifetime anyway.
