Why surprised. It is no different to what is going on here. I suspect that the government has got involved due to the sheer scale of the scams and the fact that Spain is a member of the EU. Paul

Fiendish Paul, I know it is no different to what is going on in North Cyprus. That is why I posted it! However,I am not convinced that the only reason interest has been shown is because Spain is a member of the EU. I think it is more subtle than that. FYI. I have been an expat for many years and know of the total indifference shown in the past by the UK government and British Embassies to the many concerns facing its citizens overseas. Recently, there has been a slight change of focus , the previous government just ignored everything, but there is growing evidence that members of the new coalition government are prepared to listen. When I am able to post more I will.

zookeeper, Don't count on HMG bailing out UK citizens in the north. First off money is in short supply and secondly they will just say warnings were posted but ignored.

It is strange that on the one hand Brits complain about the "Nanny state", but on the other they somehow expect the UK govt to bail them out of any situation even when they've made a free choice to leave these shores. Denny is correct, I'm sure the UK govt has much more pressing priorities, and indeed it will always point out that warnings were posted about the dangers of buying in Cyprus,North and South. Any ex-pat in NC who thinks that the UK Govt, the Turkish Govt or the TRNC Govt will rush to their aid and protect them from the property scandals is unfortunately in for a rude awakening.
