Passengers on a Turkish Airlines jet have overpowered a man who tried to hijack their flight from Norway to Istanbul, security sources say. Turkish media reported that the man put on a mask and tried to force his way into the cockpit, saying he had a bomb. He is said to have demanded that the plane return to Oslo before being subdued by passengers. The man was arrested when the plane landed at Istanbul's Ataturk airport. No-one was hurt. Turkish media said the suspect was a Turkish citizen from a Kurdish village in the south-eastern region of Anatolia. The man's motives were unclear. BBC I wonder how long " No-one was hurt"

Erm If the guy got on a plane departing from Oslo and then attempted a hijack with the intention of forcing the plane to go back to Oslo beggars the question why did he get on the plane in the first place as he was already at his intended destination. Or am I missing something. (no sarky replies) AJ

Ten If he was an illegal immigrant being deported back to Turkey then he would have been in the company of a security operative. They do not just dump them on a plane and forget about them.

If he was an illegal immigrant perhaps he should have been in the hold as excess baggage when the only mask he would need would be for oxygen !

Hipps It is quite easy. My brother in-law does it out of Gatwick and he has flown to some interesting places but 9 times out of 10 he never gets out of the arrival airport. He is contracted to a private security firm and he gets paid by the flight. But unfortunately due to the restrictions now on immigrants (laugh) his trips are getting fewer. But I am sure I can put a good word in for you if you are interested.

AJ, >>If he was an illegal immigrant being deported back to Turkey then he would have been in the company of a security operative<< I don't know what Norway's policy is, but most folks being deported from RoC to ( say) Ukraine / Russia are NOT accompanied beyond boarding the plane.

According to Scandinavian newspapers, he was a Kurdish asylum seeker, who had had his final request for asylum turned down. He had then agreed to a voluntary repatriation, and was therefore not accompanied (by police) on the plane. (He had been in Scandinavia since 2008). It seems as if he regretted the "voluntary" part just before they landed in Istanbul. The man is now reported to be in a psychiatric clinic in Istanbul, to see if he is mentally fit to stand trial. I´m just glad nobody were seriously hurt.
