Article in yesterdays Sunday Times Travel section 'Fancy a bargain with your ice cream?'

I can't give a link as you have to pay to view these days.

'Chris Haslam reveals which countries offer the best value for your summer holidays, with his expert guide to where to go - and why'

Under Europe and the Med he mentions Spain & Portugal. 'Spain is our pick for holiday value in 2011.' The tourism minister 'observed that the industry was the to the countries economic recovery - and made it clear that prices for everything from hotel rooms to hire cars had to stay barato. "Resorts are fighting to attract customers to hotels, bars and restaurants, and shopkeepers are offering discounts on goods to get extra trade in." says BA of travelsupermarket.com. As increasing numbers of Spainish hotels go all inclusive, bars and restaurants face a stark choice; slash prices or shut up shop.

'Greek tourism has hit the skids.' Wildcat strikes and riots led to about 30,000 cancellations and some predict that nearly a third of the country's hotels face bankruptcy. With 1 in 5 jobs dependent on tourism, the Greek government knows it has to turn the business around. VAT on hotels stays has been cut from 11% to 6.5% and owners now understand they need to pass those savings along to spur demand.'

Italy and France get mentioned.

Then he turns to Turkey.

'This time last year, Turkey was top of the pops with the tour ops - the supercheap alternative to the Med resorts inside the eurozone. Holiday companies bought up all the accomodation they could find, from swish seaside resorts to ropy apartments up the hill, in the expectation of a mass defection from Greece and Spain. Then the Turks realised how popular they were and raised prices to the extent that, by July, the cost of living in Marmaris was 64% higher than in Malaga.'

Oh, and not once did Cyprus get a mention North or South. Despite the publicity saying that tourism is a key part of the government economic plans, this article does not bode well in my humble opinion.

The rest of that part of the article added:

'Thomas Cook still thinks "Turkey will continue to hold the top spot in 2011, offering the widest choice of accommodation and hard to beat value for money." Others aren't so sure. The country comes 9th out of 10 on Thomson's 2011 hot list, and only two other tour ops were keen. Travelzest (0800 171 2155, travelzest.com ) mentions the Asfiya Hotel, in Kalkan, where a week in May costs £637; and KE Advetures (01768 773966, keadventure.com ) - which admits that "real value for money" can be found "only by going off the beaten track" - suggests a family expedition to the spectacular Taurus Mountains for £995 (children (£835).'

It seems to me that the temptation of greed that I have witnessed in the TRNC will be their undoing if they raise their prices especially on food and drink just because they were value for money in the past.

Why don't you try 'your' luck elsewhere?Lets face it,you are not a citizen,by the sound of it you don't have a property in TRNC.

I hear UK is a good place to live, also very cheap as well. However,if you don't like it there as well,I could suggest couple of EU countries, like Romania,Bulgaria.

As for your safety........well,I'll let that to be your problem.

I have NO intention of returning to UK......not yet and not for at least another 10+ years to live there again. As for Romania or Bulgaria,I've been through them few times, though not lived, they are also just as safe places as UK and very cheap too.

So Hector, based on above comments and the fact that I don't live in any of those 'lovely' countries,I can't be a threat to you.........................or can I?

Have they started taxing you for breathing yet?Or have you got no time for your own country?

In turkish we say,the sound of drums being played is lovely at a distance, try standing next to it!

With bigoted, self-opiniated and small-minded people like Yorgozlu about, it's no wonder this Island - both north and south - is moving swiftly towards a zenophobic stupor.

Anybody that knows Yorgozlu knows that he is not as described by the above, but me thinks there will be a lot more of this kind of talk on the way soon, such a shame that disillusioned losers are allowed to keep up these PERSONAL VENDETTAS AGAINST OTHER MEMBERS eh NN

Yorgozlu hits the nail on the head every time - brits/expats having a dig about everything in TRNC and yet they choose to live there and purchase property there - the problem is half of them are bored and just want something to mouth off about and moaning is a national british past time. Prices rise everywhere the TRNC is not stuck in a time warp . Bureacracy is onerous in most countries not just trnc.

Tourism is dead in the water because everywhere people are caught up in the Global recession money is tight .

I hope the North continues to attract folk who just want a really nice place to holiday. I can see that the lager louts, unruly kids and folk wanting change out of £1 for a meal are slowly being discouraged ''thank goodness''

Such nice places are growing more and more every time we visit it gets better for us !! Just love it .

Msg 18:

>>With bigoted, self-opiniated and small-minded people like Yorgozlu about, it's no wonder this Island - both north and south - is moving swiftly towards a zenophobic stupor.<<

Allow me to play the Devil's Advocate. Followers of these forums will know full well that in the years before the Orams ruling when there was no tomorrow, it was de rigeur to be as derogatory and insulting as possible to the Greek Cypriots and their refugees on whose property the vast majority of Brits' property has been built. At the same time it was essential to brown-nose all and any Turkish Cypriots, Turkey and her armed forces in Cyprus.

But now the bubble has burst and a solution to the Cyprus problem is clearly not going to favour foreigners and their property rights, who else has noticed the change in attitudes? It's a supreme irony that the xenophobia and bigotry which was once aimed at the GCs is now being targeted at TCs who reflect the opinions of a sizeable number of their community.

If you use terminology like:

"Turks are 2nd class citizens"

"Brits go home"

"Cheapskates, deserving everything that happens for buying cheap in the TRNC"

and much, much more derogatory, often too offensive to repeat (but still in writing for all to view) then you have to accept you will be viewed as a bigot and racist. Whatever nationality.

Denny, perhaps views have changed as people have done more research and spent more time sifting through fact and propaganda? Perhaps experience has showed the true state of affairs in TRNC and people are aware that much corruption is not only perpetrated but encouraged by the lack of legal protection?

On the whole people tend to share their experience as opposed to "moan and whinge" about it. It appears only to be viewed as moaning and whinging because it bursts peoples bubbles and does have a negative effect on the future prospects of the TRNC.

What's that saying?

"The truth hurts"

Bradus';

Did you porpusly not mentioned anything about the crook expats in TRNC or has it simply just escaped your attention?

Most of you had sold a half a million pound worth of property to buy in ....Spain.......etc.What did you have to sell to buy in TRNC and have enough money left to bank and live off the interest for the rest of your life, other then, your 2 up 2 down or your ex council flat?Has it also simply escaped your attention about the fact that 'you are not a citizen, like Cypriots in UK and therefore you'll always be a visitor? My 68 years old mother who had not been to UK up until 1990 has never carried anything other then British passaport all her life.Has it never accured to you WHY?I can assure you,she had not made it up.Has it never accured to you that one day,the Cyprus issue would turn around and hount you, especialy the land and property issues? It was all there in black and white, but you choose to ignore.

and now,the GCs are in EU,who can sue you for buying 'their land/property' in the eyes of the european law,it's all TRNC governments fault!NO,it is in fact your own,the greed had got the better of most of you.None of you had been forced to buy.You all knew of the fact that you need PTP to buy (wrong or right),but you choose to hear what you wanted to and still bought, when you should've at least known that some of you will be refused ptp, otherwise there'd be no need for such thing.Your own fellow countrymen had seen TRNC as an opportunity to con 'you' out millions of £s and gave you nothing. And now,you started shouting stupidly, 'no deeds no money'.Even my 12 year old doughter knows,it's impossible (wrong or right, just facts).

If you want to stand any chance of having rights in TRNC,go take it on your own gevernment for our recognition.Especialy UK,since they had given british citizenship to most Cypriots at the time of RULING CYPRUS.

And now with all Cyprus issues gradualy surficing and the global crises (which also happens to be TRNC governments fault) where the going has got tougher, you think you'll get behind your keyboard and critisize yet again MY TRNC government or its law,but at the same time still choose to live here.

I have met some lovely, beautiful British expats here in TRNC but most of you don't fit in that category.

What's that saying?

Yorgozulu,

As usual you have chosen to divert from the subject matter, which just to remind you, was about your frequent racist remarks and open bigotry. I did not differentiate between crooks, TC or UK.It is you that has decided to bring nationality into the debate. From my point of view, a crime is a crime, no matter what the nationality of the perpetrator.

It is the act that is right or wrong and one cannot make exceptions because "IT'S MY COUNTRY" You obviously do not like what you hear about your homeland but lets face facts, it is deserving of it's reputation.

So yes, I dare to criticise YOUR TRNC government and its ineffective laws. Amazingly I do the same with my own! This is because I believe in justice and have never been happy sitting back and accepting practices that cause suffering and misery. More importantly, that can be changed very quickly to the benefit of all.

By the way there are many assumptions in what you have wrote above but whats new?

Yorgozlu....msg 26

"Most of you had sold a half a million pound worth of property to buy in ..."

Are you speaking from personal experience here?

Is that what you got for your place in England....a country you've spent much of your life in and gave you rights and equality under the law?

Your dual citizenship has served you well, and I'm sure you took full advantage of everything England had to offer.

Now that you've returned to your beloved homeland ( presumably you think it's safe now after 36 years? ),you seem hellbent on castigating Brits who have had the audacity to buy property in the TRNC and have suffered as a result of the endemic corruption and discrimination.

You have played the victim card too long.Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of what happened in Cyprus from the 50's to 1974, this is no excuse for the state sanctioned fraud that has beset thousands of foreign buyers in the TRNC.

yorgozlu,

I simply quoted Hector's words as brilliant (see msg 12). I thought so, so what?

Don't take it personally!!!

Most holiday makers I've spoken to visiting N Cyprus for the first time really enjoy their time here. It can't be such a bad place for tourism now, can it? Of course there's much scope for improving/promoting this sector.

message 33, thats well said so remember you are not at home, you are a person living abroad. Yourgozlu is assumely at home and this gives a right to sa what he do about people with Visitors residence, as if they don't like it here they have the freedom to leave at any time as this is not their country.

Yorgozlu, there is less then 10 expats living here as expats are people sent here by their company for a time limited job assignment. The people here is just living abroad for one or the other reasons so no need to use words like "expats", properly invented of some people to assume they are upclass compared to the Cypriots.
