| I have often wondered why there was a cul-de-sac* in the Turkish front line in 1974. Was the Turkish Army intending to split the South in two parts - when the Turkish Goevernment was "advised" to halt the troops? * Follow the road past Ercan International Airport, via Kırklar, to Gaziler, where you will be stopped by the Turkish Army. The cul-de-sac itself is inaccessible. |

| When I was with the UN, the story was told that the Mother of one of the TCSF commanders was trapped in Akincilar/Louroujina and that he took the unilateral decision to 'liberate' the village. The Turkish Army supposedly went along with the plan on the basis that they would withdraw back to their original objectives when the TkCyp people had been extracted. Unfortunately, the rules of the UN brokered ceasefire arrangement did not allow for any troop movements in any direction (including reverse) and thus the TCSF and Turkish Army were stuck with their 'gain' much to the dismay of the Turkish commanders. It is also told that the church was only occupied after the ceasefire came in to force. I do not know if this version is true, but is what is told to UN troops at bed time. DD |
