Quiz (01_1): I have divided a picture of (part of) an historic monument in TRNC in 10 rectangles. ▶ The questions: Where was the picture taken and what do you see on the picture? ▶ I'll fill one rectangle every day - but there'll be no winner in this Quiz if in the end there are less than three empty rectangles to fill! Here and there I'll give a cryptic hint or some info... ▶ The prize in this Quiz: The first good (complete!) answer wins an invitation for two for an Historical Walk in Kyrenia. OK, here we go: expats and swallows, show your knowledge about Northern Cyprus... ▶ Click this link to view the picture: [ http://www.allcrusades.com/bb_webpages_04/04_quiz_01/tekst.html ]

The fortified wall along the east side of the old harbour near Chimena restaurant & bar? Built by the Venetians I guess (hence city state clue)?

RE msg 18, Donty: Grrrr..! Donty did it! It's the east wall of Kyrenia castle. One of the three walls rebuilt by the Venetians around 1540, when they began to fear an Ottoman attack on Cyprus. The Venetians fortified the West, South and East wall, with many cannon ports, because they feared an attack from the land side. The North wall, built by the Lusignans (1192-1489), facing the sea, remained unchanged. War ships at the time didn't have cannons aboard, so the small threat from the North (the sea) didn't justify the high costs of a stronger wall. The Venetians also changed the shape of the towers from square (Lusignan) to round. The reason was that cannon ball would destroy a square tower easily, while cannon ball will bounce from a round tower. [ more ]
