This afternoon: a new History Quiz (in this thread). And on request: updates in a slower sequence. So people who only use the computer in the evening have a fair chance to participate also. Any other requests or remarks?

Quiz (04): Again I have divided a picture of (part of) an historic monument in TRNC in 10 rectangles. ▶ The questions: Where was the picture taken and what do you see on the picture? ▶ I'll fill one rectangle at random times - but there'll be no winner in this Quiz if in the end there are less than three empty rectangles to fill! ▶ Here and there I'll give a cryptic hint or some info... ▶ The prize in this Quiz: The first good (complete!) answer wins an invitation for two for an Historical Walk in Kyrenia. OK, here we go again: expats and swallows, show your knowledge about Northern Cyprus... ▶ Click this link to view the picture: [ http://www.allcrusades.com/bb_webpages_04/08_quiz_05/tekst.html ] Here's a hint to start with: "A FASCINATING STORY AND IT'S STILL PARTLY THERE - IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK..." P.S. Difficulty of this Quiz: MEDIUM difficult...

darrener2. You are not quite right. The temple of Zeus was erected in the centre of the city, on a site which had been used before for other purposes, late in the Hellenistic period. It suffered badly from earthquakes. The architectural styles on its original columns and entablature were in a mixture of the Doric and Corinthian. Keep trying.

I think the two brothers were Henry 11 and Amaury of Lusignan ....in 1307.....Cyprus was in turmoil, and Amaury engineered a coup, and sent Henry off into exile whilst he reigned in his absence..........

How interesting. I never knew there was a castle in that area. I have now read about it on your website Hans and can see the outline of the walls that you have circled but I have a question. What was on the small, steep hill that is at the south end of the little river?

| She did it again: Darrener2 is the winner of Quiz-05 (msg 28)! I2 i4 56e 8ui1e3 4a6789o2e4 o6 78e 0e234a6 7a901e o4 5a789i1 It is the ruined watchtower of the Templar castle at Gastria (Note: or "of Gastria"). ▶ Click this link to view the full picture: [ http://www.allcrusades.com/bb_webpages_04/08_quiz_05/tekst.html ]. RE msg 32, Donty: I think it is just another hill, although I also wondered when I spent my first day there. I circled what looks like some fortress, found an "entrance" but couldn't enter the center of this "fortress" - it is blocked by natural stones/rocks. I have not found a trace of man shaped stones or buildings! [ END of Quiz-05, unless there are more questions about The Castle of Gastria?)
