QUIZ (07): Again I have divided a picture of (part of) an historic monument in TRNC in 20 squares...

▶ The two questions: WHERE (a description is OK) was the picture taken and WHAT do you see on the picture?

▶ I'll fill one or two squares at random times - but there'll be no winner in this Quiz if in the end there are less than six empty rectangles to fill!

▶ Here and there I'll give a cryptic hint or some info... Hint-1: read the title of the thread...

▶ The prize in this Quiz: The first good (complete!) answer wins an invitation for two for an "Historical Walk in Kyrenia".

OK, here we go again: expats and swallows, show your knowledge about Northern Cyprus... I hope to see new nicknames...

▶ ▶ ▶ Click this (shortened but safe!) link to view the picture: [ http://is.gd/SXYvY0 ].

P.S. Level of difficulty of this Quiz: MEDIUM...

Hans. For the sake of Donty and Darrener2 can you make this slightly easier and give them some more clues. )

Bill, is one of the funny English football teams playing tonight? It's so quiet in this thread... No names, but as you know the thread is usually crowded with people claiming to know the answer...

I've updated the picture again.

2 : Here's another hint (2):

==== =a= =e ==e ==ee= ======== == ======a= ====== == ======a

a's & e's now given.

The north entrance of the Bedestan, formerly St Nicholas Church of the English before the restoration project.

"The north entrance of the Bedestan, formerly St Nicholas Church of the English before the restoration project."

Sorry, I forgot to mention it is in Lefkosa.

I know how Hans likes to be precise so the location is close to the Selimiye Mosque (formerly St Sophia Cathedral) and the Bandabuliya.

Of course you are partly right darrener2.

Some historians had identified this church with that of St Nicholas of the order of St Thomas of Canterbury. Today the identification is considered to be mistaken.

Therefore I think it's 1 point each. )

The large Byzantine church was altered again in the beginning of the 15th century and at the end of the 15th century the north facade with the impressively decorated gothic entrance was constructed. The dome, which covers the main church’s fourth aisle, was added during the same period.

The building was badly damaged during the Ottoman conquest .

Today it is known with the Turkish word ‘Bedestan’ which means ‘covered market’ since during the Ottoman period the building functioned as a fabrics market and it was also used as a storage space for wheat for a while.

Pray tell, what have I written that is partly wrong?

As I recall,

Could that be deemed as partly incorrect. Or have I read that wrong? )

Well, if the name 'St Nicholas of the English' is good enough for Hans to use when referring to this building, who am I to disagree? ;-)

You can but you will never win!

If my crossword solving skills are up to scratch then his clue

==== =a= =e ==e ==ee= ======== == ======a= ====== == ======a

reads something along the lines of

This may be the Greek Orthodox St Nicholas Church in Lefkosia

Yes, but some historians had identified this church with that of St Nicholas of the order of St Thomas of Canterbury. Today the identification is considered to be mistaken.

We need a ruling on this and I fear that Hans may not be able to make it for fear of upsetting his fellow historians. )

Good morning! I'll join this thread within an hour - first do some daily tasks. And may I remind you that it's two hours later here in TRNC than in the UK? While Darrener2 and Bill were virtually fighting for the points in the Quiz, I was asleep at 2.20 at night. Please keep this in mind when in future you two need a referee, impartial of course...

For as long as it lasts: back in business... The wonderful technicians of Kibtek succeeded to end the power cut in Yesiltepe (and elsewhere?), which started minutes after I typed message 20. The Quiz-07 will be continued as soon as I've finished some other tasks. I apologise for any inconvenience...

RE msg 7, darrener2: Right, again! I'm going to follow Bill's hint: make the Quizzes more difficult. Prepare, Darrener2..., you won't win Quiz-08...

Quoting D2: (...) If my crossword solving skills are up to scratch then his clue

==== =a= =e ==e ==ee= ======== == ======a= ====== == ======a

reads something along the lines of

This may be the Greek Orthodox St Nicholas Church in Lefkosia".

Almost right, but you were "cheating" with the last word, which should be Nicosia (7 characters). Lefkoşa = Turkish for North Nicosia. And Lefkosia = Greek for South Nicosia. Oh, never mind.

I'll update the web page with your (nick)name as the winner, so you'll be world famous in Northern Cyprus.

P.S. Darrener2: We must seriously discuss your prices! Any ideas when (if you want) to walk? Mail me a suggestion, please.

P.P.S. Prices: Donty, I haven't heard from you yet!

Thank you Hans. I will contact you to discuss my prices but, as I am sure you are aware, if you need to ask the price you cannot afford it.

Only joking of course.

RE msg 27, Darrener2: I'm sorry, I made this price/prize error in a previous post also. I have problems to remember when it's price/prize and worse when it's American or British English (advise/advice, apologise/apologize). Grrrr...

Oh, by the way, next Quiz will be done in the Dutch language... Ik weet zeker dat je dat niet erg vindt...
