Researchers in Canada have found that people who are bi-lingual, those who speak another language frequently are likely to develop alzheimers four years later than the norm. Juggling two languages makes the brain more resilient. Researchers say that learning another language provides greater protection against alzheimers than any drug yet invented.

Or Greek, the majority language on the island which, if our protesting Turkish Cypriot hosts succeed, we will be hearing a lot more of in the north.

msge 4 that's true...no point learning a language if you are not going to use it. I think Greek is on the rise as people like Boris Johnson and Joanna Lumley are calling for Greek to be taught in all British schools.

I have to say I do like a bit of Greek but back to the subject, I reckon Mandarin's the way to go.

I believe this is true. Had learnt some Turkish while working 3 years in Istanbul and also in N.Cyprus where it is very useful of course. Think it is harder to learn a language when older but not impossible and have been learning (Scots) Gaelic for several years which is difficult I find but enjoyable. I just love languages!
