The exchange rate is better from the bank dispenser than the money changer.

Why lift £ sterling from machine to avoid small charge and then have to change it for TL at a worse rate.

That has been my experience others may have had a different experience ?

I enquired in a Nationwide branch a couple of weeks ago and they informed me they have stopped "Free" withdrawals and now charge.

'As I understand matters, you have used an ATM in Northern Cyprus in the past to withdraw sterling and want to know what charges if any you will face. I am pleased to be able to confirm that the new FlexAccount policy change relating to cash withdrawals overseas does not affect the withdrawal of sterling from ATMs overseas. You will continue to be able to withdraw sterling from ATMs overseas free of charge. I would like to offer my sincerest apologies for the confusion you experienced surrounding this issue as a result of correspondence with Nationwide.'

If you use a flexaccount card to withdraw money from ATM machine and withdraw Turkish Lira you are not only charged 2% for doing this but you get the exchange rate in the UK. In my experience this is always a lot lower than anywhere in the TRNC. I withdraw sterling and then change at the exchange opposite Lemar as I have found they give the best rate of exchange.

Using Nationwide credit card for bill paying no penalty in Europe (Turkey TRNC included)

Flexaccount used to be commercial rates for foreign currency so good ) now there is a penalty unless you withdraw Stirling from atm

abbey/santandair penalise you for withdrawing Stirling from current accounts from foreign atm's similar to nationwide

Halifax & Bank of Scotland do not charge for Stirling withdrawals from foreign atm's

Changing Sterling into TL at the bank is never as good a rate as changing at the money exchange as always been our experience in NC and Turkey, we always take Sterling or get it from ATM and go to an exchange office.

The way to go... draw out Sterling from Nationwide Flex-account using Debit Card (not cash card)... then visit an HSBC teller and pay it into your HSBC Sterling Current a/c... then go to the ATM and buy TL exchange and then draw it out in TL... no fees and good rates.

HSBC, TEB and at least some of Garantee Bank ATMs - the one outside Bektas in Karaoglanoglu certainly gives sterling. 2.61 sterling/TL at the money exchange in Alancak on Monday.
