i bought a villa in 08

I dont have a pool but wish I did

folks say I am better off what with all the running cost

just wondered if a pool is important when making a purchase and would you purchase a property without a pool

i wonder how many would be prepared to make an investment on a villa with title deeds today without a pool

It would depend a lot on the location of the villa, I would not want to be without one where I live for sure.

I am sorry to say I would not look at a villa to rent/buy without a pool, just to jump in and cool off as often as you need in the heat is a must in my book, topping the list before anything else...

I think most people with families love having a pool it is part of the dream having the pool outside. The running costs are high but worth it for the enjoyment they bring, good exercise & they do add value to the property.A must for holiday rental out there. I love having the pool to enjoy in the summer months.

I would never bother with a pool. Unless you are a dedicated swimmer, and user of the pool, and very rich, it's a waste of money.

given my time over again - i'd go for a 5 man (cold) hot tub....

Great for cooling off in the summer, easy to heat to get piing hot in the winter, easy and cheap to maintain and much cheaper / easier to install than a pool..............

imho - a pool s a bit like a marble floor - seemed like a good idea at the time.....

With the benefit of hindsight we would never have had a pool. I admit that when weather is really hot, I have a dip 5 or 6 times a day but not for a real swim, rather than a cool off, hence a top of the range cold/hot tub would have been a better choice. We are less then 5 minutes drive from 3 private beaches and frankly the cost of building the pool, the water, a pool cleaner etc., etc makes it an expensive luxury, particularly as you get older and don't like slippery Roman steps and find the metal steps at the other end difficult e.g. my Husband. An awful lot of TC's seem to prefer a lovely garden to a pool. However, I would NEVER buy a house/bungalow if it didn't have a garage. Couldn't manage without it.

Jacuzzi/ Hot tub for us. We use ours everyday cold (its not as it gets warmed by the sun a bit) in the summer and piping hot in the winter. There is nothing nicer than laying out under the stars in the hot tub with a nice glass of something. Easy to maintain and keep. Easy to get fitted and decked out. Also you can take it with you when you move

By the look of this thread, the move seems to be away from pools or is it just the pro pool people are not switched on. It's all very nice for people in the UK to say "Oh, you lucky thing, fancy you having your own private pool".......they don't have to pay for it though.

We have a pool at our house, but not living there permanently yet and it is expensive to maintain. We have chosen not to rent while we are not there, but renting could be a way to recoup some of the costs of the pool's maintenance. For me, having a pool was a must, mainly to be able to cool off when it gets too hot in addition to the fact that my husband loves the pool and is in it several times a day when we are there. It's a matter of preference and affordability really.

At risk of disagreeing, as full time residents we find the pool is absolutely essential. Diana finds the July / August heat very oppressive and would typically get in the pool around 8 times a day to cool off, plus swimming the odd 50 lengths for exercise. Is it a luxury? Not to us. The cost? well if you maintain it yourself, you have the chemicals to pay for, and the pool pump to run, and the water to top up through evaporation it is not really excessive for the sheer value of having it on your doorstep. - Also, try skinny dipping at midnight when full of vodka cocktails, not something you can do on a public beach!

Unfortunately our pool has been empty for nearly two years awaiting a full renovation, luckily we have 2 neighbours who let us use theirs. We do go down to the beach occasionally, but this is more like an expedition than a quick dive off the patio.

So, for us, no we would never buy / rent a place without a pool, but each to their own.

We did not look at any villas without a pool as it was high on our priorities list. Some friends bought a villa without a pool and bought a hot tub. They never use it and wished they had installed a pool now.

On an "Island" with next to No water, and a stone age "expensive" electricity supply, how can having a pool that either leaks or is expensive to run be anything other than utter self indulgence,,,, I guess it's a case of "I can so I will" regardless of the environmental consequences ..............

We bought our villa last year and high on the priority list was a pool. I love swimming, and do so for exercise as well as cooling off. Great for the grand children too and other visitors. We have a neighbour who helps us maintain it and are learning how to do so ourselves. It is a must for us.

We rent to live here and we have no pool, mind you we would be just too busy to make use of a pool, we're always too busy working and away from the house every day. Hubby still says he would like to have a pool - I think more to look at and admire though!

Where I live, I'm happy with seeing the sea every morning and in the summer sitting on the patio for breakfast enjoying watching the sun, sea and mountains. Also in the summer when we have a free afternoon, if you don't have a pool it's a good excuse to visit friends more regularly who do have pools.

Personally, with permanent living here in mind, if I wanted a pool I'd plum for a communal one on a site where you can share the costs of upkeep.

Me. Ivé got a pool back home, was great 1st year, all i do now is throw money into it... novelty soon wears off.

It does add value to your property tho.

"adds value to the property though"

What you mean, I think ,is that having a pool makes the poorly built "high maintenance" property even more expensive to run... Doesn't sound like much of a PLUS to me ..

I suppose in the long term what you pay out in pool upkeep and maintainence more than outweighs the added value of the re-sale.

mess 27 - you've hit the nail on the head - the novelty soon wears off and the stark reality of the on going cost and hastle factor soon creeps in.....

bearing in mind the state of the market, its not likely to be a good investment anyway............

Me, no pool. Shower on the roof, and fab views of sea and mountains. Also got a jaqcuzzi indoors with a 15ft wide window! Husband who doesn';t swim, and both of us with experience of a pool in Australia (in a gated community) and knowledge of the cost and hard work. Also, very aware of water shortage, so contribute by not having a pool, not having a well. We c ould hav e bought a pool - but for what. As one who was a swimmer I don't don't need a sheep dip(i.e. plunge pool or one the size of three stokes and reach the other end). Might limit my wanting to sell, but

we are more than happy with no pool and no garden of any size. Hence no hard wlork, but enjoyment of what we have.

we all make choices and are happy, BUT if i won the |Lotto and could have servants, now that could be quite different.
