The Commons' Public Accounts Committee report found that Family doctors in England are working less, but paid more. It also pointed out that pay for GP partners had shot up by 58% to £114,000 a year, although much smaller rises had been seen for salaried GPs and nurses. Is it time now to put a 'cap' on Doctors Salaries?

jakki. Sorry, it was my attempt at being humorous/sarcastic. I meant, they may be paid it but they don't 'earn' it!

GP's do indeed earn a substantial wage and are given more status in our society than is due. (Just my opinion). I met a GP who was looking to buy a property in Regents park. I bet many professionals can't do that. One of my best friends is a GP. He openly admits to me that he is unable to sufficiently help many of his patients. Most people visiting a GP (70% has been cited ) are suffering from psychosomatic conditions expressed as anxiety and stress. This is probably the output of the other thread on this forum 'What is happening in the UK?' In doubt GP's just label symptomns as a virus. That keeps it simple

Problem with current doctors salaries was brought about by a big review by the current government several years ago. If I remember correctly, Blair and co said doctors where earning too much especially when they did out of hours calls. So they brought in the call centres from where locum doctors are dispatched to see the patients out of hours. Then a bonus scheme was to operate to ensure GP's etc did not loose too much. Problem is the treasury team (erm, one G. Brown Esq in charge) got there sums wrong. So doctors are now able to earn more than before. So if Brown strarts to tinker with pay again he better get it right.

I work as a medical secretary in a GP practice. As far as I am aware, the current arrangements for GP salaries (the practice for paying them more for doing less hours, call outs, etc.) is under review and in fact surgeries have to open for longer hours, but with no extra money, to try and "claw back" some of the money they are currently being paid. I may, of course, be completely wrong about this - us ordinary workers don't get told much. Incidentally, wholeheartedly agree with Tinker - footballers are paid ludicrous amounts of money and why can't doctors be compared when it comes to talking about money? J

Couldn't agree more footballers are incredibly overpaid. There wages are insulting. I can say this even though it was my first ever profession.

Nobody could compare Doctors and footballers in the same sentence. Doctors train for 5 years and do a fantastic worthwhile job, Footballers on the other hand are a bunch of vastly overpaid pansies.

Yes, footballers are paid ridiculous amounts of money but that's a rflection of our society, we obviously value them more than we do Doctors. However, Nuerse earn a pittance compared to Doctors and are not held in anything like the esteem, even though we do a lot of their work for them.
