Treesy, Start low tech... try Saf Ispirto pure alcohol available from any supermarket. It's a good cleaning fluid for all sorts of sticky residues... I use it for all sorts of tasks where Cif won't work... Avoid solvents unless they are recommended for plastics as they may adversely affect the PVC..

I used vinegar warmed in the microwave, leave on for a few minutes and then it should easily remove with kitchen roll, or if stubborn stains a scourer may be needed.

I ran a window company in UK. What "Glue" is on the frames because glue should not be used to make them. Is it on the surface of the PVC? Is it the residue from the protective tape adhesive? Or is it residue from adhesive tape like selotape or similar? Let me know and I may be able to help Vince

Are the window frames white or wood effect? White PVC can be sanded with fine grit paper finishing off with a wet and dry grade. The glue from adhesive velcro will not have penetrated the PVC surface, therefore it is possible to either scrape or sand down the surface. I used to use the foam sanding blocks from B&Q to polish out blemishes on white PVC windows, followed by Cif to give a polish. If the windows are wood effect then this material is like a thick "Fablon". It is a foil hot glued onto the PVC surface. Depending on the adhesive used on the velcro, I would try warm baby oil with a soft cloth. The fact that you are refitting fly screens means that you are gluing the new velcro onto the origional surface; you might get away with just attaching the new velcro directly to the previous area.

Mr Vince, thanks for advice - they are white pvc - will try scraping/sanding and maybe using alcohol too as Groucho suggested. I have taken screens down now - and dont intend to put up again until next summer - so want to clean off residue really - plus think new velcro probably wont stick too well to dirty frames. Thanks for your help Treesy

Before you try scraping, try this: Get some cellotape, place it over the bit thats stuck and pull back slowly, it should pull it off. Its worked many time when price tags leave sticky gunge mark on new glassware.

Try a bit of WD 40 on a dry cloth.....bought some from Marshalls near the Ship hotel. Removed the sticky residue from the stickers left on our washing machine and also the sticky substance from the fly catchers that left an awful residue on our PVC window frames.

Best thing I've found for getting sticky, gluey residues off is white spirit aka turps substitute - known locally as 'sentetik tiners', I tink ;-)

White spirit is quite expensive compared to the Saf Ispirto which can be bought in any Supermarket... Saf Ispirto is also useful for lighting BBQs (it's what the locals use a lot) I use it for charcoal lighting because it works in seconds and leaves no odd waxy smell like fire lighter blocks do... make sure you stand well back sprinkle some on let it sink into the charcoal for about five seconds and light it taking care.... As pure alcohol it's useful for many cleaning jobs. including removing stubborn tape residue...
