You live in Northern Cyprus permanently or you are a "swallow" or a tourist - and you know of course that this particular city plan didn't change for centuries... In the narrow street the majestic monument is still there, dominating the area, silent, the secret kept... But the walls of the monument talk if you are willing to listen...

And for the first time in an unknown number of years I was fortunate enough to have a one time chance to look inside and listen to the long forgotten stories from the walls that saw it all happen centuries ago...

The cries of the owner and his men servants, when they were butchered by rough invaders from the main land, can still be heard...

Anyone interested in a new photo-quiz? You may say "yes!" (I hope), but I warn you: this won't be easy...

QUIZ (13): Again I have divided a picture of (part of) "something historic" in TRNC in 20 squares...

▶ The one and only question for you: WHAT is it..?!

▶ I'll fill one or two squares at random times - but there'll be no winner in this Quiz if in the end I have to uncover more than 15 squares...

▶ Here and there I'll give a cryptic hint or some info in this thread...

▶ The prize in this Quiz: an invitation for two for an "Historical Walk of your choice".

OK, here we go again: expats, swallows and tourists, show your knowledge about Northern Cyprus... I hope to see new participants in this thread...

▶ ▶ ▶ Click this (shortened but safe!) link to view the Quiz-picture: [ http://is.gd/bmNgSW/photo_quiz_13 ].

P.S. Estimated level of difficulty of this Quiz: EXTREMELY DIFFICULT...

"P.S. Estimated level of difficulty of this Quiz: EXTREMELY DIFFICULT... "

DC,

I don't think you even need to say this: you don't do easy!

How do we suppose to know? Looks like mosaic ( very cleverly obscured by number 13). Could be one of these new excavations in Famagusta or Salamis that no one ( apart from you) have yet seen.

Any chance of a clue?

Bill, the pictures were taken last Sunday in (yeah...) and for me it was a sensation to be allowed to walk on more than five centuries old tiles of a wonderful l....a (hint!).

As a special favour to my favourite moderator Bill may decide the number of the square on the picture I will uncover next..!

@ msg 12, Clarissa2: Nope. The trébuchet ballon was one of the many thrown at the time and just landed there... Killing someone? Destroying the roof?

I've uncovered square # 9 and linked a picture; just click square # 9 to view the hint...

Re : Msg 21,

Perhaps No1 is happy, but I'm not! Still no idea!

The only thing I could think of is that it's George Pol Georgiou's house and studio ( or what has been left of it), as his paintings have never been recovered from Famagusta and now mysteriously turning up at different auctions.

Although there is still some doubt and I'm on thin ice with the proof: the pictured mansion in this PHOTO-QUIZ-1 "may" be the so-called "Queen's House" in Famagusta, where the abdicated last Queen of Cyprus, Caterina Cornaro, "may" have lived a short time, before moving to Nicosia. So the winner of this Quiz is: Clarissa2 (msg 16)!

Re : George Pol Georgiou

DC,

Branching out : I'm quite intrigued now .

Do you happen to known anything about his house & studio: its location, whether it still stands and what happened to the paintings?

I drew a blank on this.

@ msg 27, Clarissa2: No problem.

@ msg 28, Clarissa2: In "Famagusta, the story of the city" (ISBN:9963-9091-1-6, 2005) I found these words by George Pol. Georghiou:

Ruins of churches,

bodies and souls,

Famagusta, old harbour of Cyprus

In this book I read: "... the so-called "Queen's House", a mansion that, in recent years, was used by the Cypriot painter George Pol. Georghiou as his studio." Hope this (partly) answers your question?

In the "Queen's House" I was shown the plate on this picture (by the caretaker, who kindly invited me in when he saw my interest in the building - unfortunately he didn't speak one word of English):

Re: Msg 30,

Dear DC,

It does ! It does!

It answers my question beautifully: how very fascinating to uncover yet another facet of the history of this truly interesting house.

And again: there isn't any information available about it, but you happened to have the answer!

Another question: from what you said I presume it is not opened to the public and you have just charmed your way in. Is there anything left inside?

Or am I asking too much or too many questions ?

Thanks again.

Yours truly intrigued,

Clarissa

P.S. Beautiful quote!

@ msg 33, Clarissa2: The "Queen's House" is not open to the public - I was just lucky that the caretaker appreciated my interest and invited me in. I photographed all that's left inside and you'll find it here:

Re : Msg34,

DC,

Most interesting! Thank you.

I find it remarkable that your photos of the house are the first ones, published and openly available, as well as the information linking the "Queen's House" to Georghiou.

I expect they'll attract a lot of attention from historians and researches.

Splendid!
