I have seen a flight from Glasgow direct to Paphos in July at a good price and haven't gone this route before. I am thinking of hiring a car and driving to Turtle Bay. Can anyone recommend car hire which allows driving to North?

Europcar or any firm via Holidayautos have never had a problem. Be sure and tell them you will be visiting the occupied areas before you sign for the car and commit yourself.

I did this a few weeks ago and used http://www.cyprus-car.com/ The drive is straightforward on the dual carriageway from paphos to Nicosia. The only potentially tricky bit is finding the crossing point at Metahan as it simply isn't sign-posted at all on the Greek side! Remember that you'll need to buy insurance as you're crossing over and that if the car breaks down or you're invcolved in an accident on the Turkish side it'll be your responsibility to get the car back to the South.

Once you see signs for Strovolos, veer left off the motorway, keep in the nearside lane and take your first exit. Follow signs for Kerynia (think thats how the Greeks spell it)

Did the journey yesterday. Took about 2.5 hours keeping to speed limits. This was from Lapta. Distance 190km.

You are all behind the times. What is wrong with crossing at Limnidi/Yeshilirmak. That is the reason why they opened that crossing. While you are going through Yesilirmak, stop and say hello to my frinds. Spend some money there. I can reccomend Shefika's bar. They could do with it.

Fred, I agree that Limnitis route is by far the more scenic via Polis and Mansoura but it's also far longer, especially with all the b***ering about to bypass Kokkina-Erenkoy because of the Turkish enclave. As soon as the troops are out of there the better. Set up a decent monument, have done with it and stop making the locals' lives even more difficult, Ankara.

Its not just scenic, it is also a lot quicker and less detremental to the environment. I look forward to the day when Lurucadis will be able to go to Limbya by walking the 500 yards instead of a trip via nicosia and 100 miles. By the way BillC I did say walking, not what you do after eating a packet of whatsits, and you wonder why your John Thomas has turned orange. Have you been to see a doctor? I know a good one in Limbya, Costakis Notsomachisio, but in the meantime lay off the cheezey whatsit, right? And needless to say the afters too. You couldn't make it up if you tried.

I would prefer the scenic route if not too much longer and difficult. Anyway, I will look at the directions and try to make my mind up. Thanks for your help everyone.
