Did you ever visit Ayia Napa in the South, the RoC - or was the name spelled as Agia Napa? Which spelling is correct and why?

And in the North, in the TRNC: do you still use the name Omorfo, Morphu or (medieval) Morphou when you mean Güzelyurt? And Karmí or Karaman?

I think the EU does a very good job with the unified transliteration of the names in Cyrillic.

Otherwise, as you have said, it would be impossible to find anything on the map unless you learn the language.

Good example is my German map of Cyprus - next to useless and even more confusing because of the different spelling - and you always end up looking for the name in Greek anyway.

I noticed on the other map I have Kyrenia is spelled as Keryneia, and Paphos as Pafos ( anything better than Pathos, as it is still spelled in some British holiday brochures ! Next time I see Pathos again I'll scream! ).

It's a lot easier distinguishing between "agia" and "ayia" than some made-up Turkish rubbish imposed by outsiders to replace the original and historic place-name and thus wipe out all traces of heritage. Being a history buff I would have thought you'd oppose cultural fascism.

Very interesting: The village of Tas pinar. The old name was Angolem which many people still use. Infact most TCYs living in the UK still use the old names. But Angolem is from the French Angouleme and is not greek.

Noticed a few errors. For example Lapta was always Lapta. Lapithos was the Greek name. In the same way that Nicosia was Lefkosa in Turkish and Lefkosia in Greek. Karavas was the name used by both communities

prior to 74.

Some places had different words used by Greeks and Turks others were the same words ie Angolem

Names of places changed into Turkish after 1974 in the north and presently used in the south are hundreds if not thousands years old!!

It is not correct saying the names presently used in the south are Greek.

Turkish/Greek or any other language speaking Cypriots have always had their own pronunciation of place names,sometimes different in their own language but in general using the ancient names pronounced in their own dialect.
