Just a few pictures of the massive fire in Kayala. Some people were injured but I am not sure how many. The fire was very close to several properties, and the helicopter was concentrating dumping the water on these properties. I only had a phone camera but this is the link : http://www.flickr.com/photos/28373139@N08/sets/72157627044484587/

Very frightening. I hope there have been no serious injuries or major loss of property.

I don't think I have ever seen so many emergency vehicles before here in Cyprus, there must be everything being thrown at this enormous fire. People from all over are racing here to help which shows such closeness within the communities.

This looks terrifying, I hope the fire is brought under control soon. So sorry to here people have been injured and hope they are not serious injuries. Hoping too that homes can be saved and damage hurt and losses are at a minimum....heart goes out to everyone there!

After many years here and having been evacuated from my home when in lived in Lapta 3 times I wish that we could have 1 (or 2) fire appliances based in Lapta as I think the next fire station is Camlibel. It is a great distance from Girne to Camlibel with Lapta probably being the central point. When I see the life boats in UK being manned by volunteers could not a few men be trained so that when the call goes out this fire engine could get somewhere a little quicker than what they travel now. A fire takes hold so quickly here as it is like a tinderbox from end of April onwards. Also I see people throwing cigarette stubs out of car windows and I go mad (I smoke) but there is an ash tray in the car should people wish to smoke. I spoke to the person who lives on the highest point in the village and sounds absolutely terrifying. Her wooden shed was burnt but house OK. Villagers in Kayarlar were absolutely great she said.

Rocking there is a fire engine based at the watch tower in Karsiyaka which is only a little bit to the East of Sirin Yali. It is manned 24/7.

This is what can happen when a cigarette end is thrown out of the car window.
