Got an invitation to a do at Acalpulco. Advice on what to expect and what I need to take.

Went to a Turkish funeral the other week, dressed in my respectful black and white outfit for the locals to come in their shorts and baseball caps, felt a silly girlie.

Mostly just money! Weddings in Cyprus (both sides) and Greece and probably Turkey are all about raising funds for the newly weds. Have been to a couple here and they just consisted of a queue with somebody at the head of it collecting the dosh. This is why invitations are delivered far and wide.

Puts me in mind of the American "Shower" custom, now sadly creeping into the UK.

My Daughter-in-Law in the States has been invited to showers by people she doesn't even know! Name simply suggested by a relative!

Normally 25TL from a person on there own and 50TL from a family.

Or whatever amount you wish.

I also thought the same as you when i was invited to my accountants sons wedding, got in line for 35mins and dropped some money in a box.

Then had a few fortune cookies or something like and went home

Sometimes its just a line up give money shake hands and leave others you stay for refreshments and music. But its quite okay to leave whenever you want.

Amazing question from a woman living together with a TURK.

As for the funeral: Uncle K was not a Turk, but a cypriot turk. Did it not occur to you, Linda, that many people came from work to pay their respect.

Black and white! Here, mostly, seen in court

Having been to Cypriot weddings North and South, yes they are pretty much the same and emanate from the days of community when everyone chipped in to help the bride and groom on their way financially. Occasionally North and south there are sit down meals, when (as a friend of mine said) you are expected to give as much money as the meal cost and a bit on top). There is often music and dancing, so when you have ifnished queing and handed over the money you can glide around the floor. If these folk are not 'friends' then chances are it is a P.O as outlined above.

Or if you don't want to bother to go and know the family a little, why not hand over an envelope with the money in and get osmeone else to take it, or deliver it to the family in advance/after the event. OR GO AND JOIN THE QUEUE if it is people you know, just to wish them well and give them a few lira and a bit of love.
