Whilst posting about the plants I am growing it came to mind to post about some of the posionous plants we have here.

I had the following plant growing in my flower bed, it appeared and I allowed it to grow and grow until I did an internet search and realised what it is! Clearly I would not be eating a strange plant from the garden but it is a worry if you have animals or children so I have pulled it up and thrown it away..

I have noticed it growing all along the new road

Poisonous...

"According to the 2007 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records,

this plant is the most poisonous in the world."

See link above.

Hi Navek,

I think it was reading that link that made me pull it up! Didn't like the sound of Ricin available in the garden..

Hi LittleQueenie,

Sounds like it could be a very dangerous plant to have in the garden.

I grew these in the Uk. Very pretty - but don't panic too much over poisonous plants, they usually taste horrible anyway. I have a front room like a greenhouse and have had 2 dogs there. They didn't chomp anything bad.

Oleander grows everywhere and that is very poisonous. Animals don't eat it. I've also got Lantanas in my garden and when I let the neighbours sheep and goats eat some of our gras, they did not go near the Oleanders or the Lantanas.

Very small children maybe a problem, but as BoTanica says they usually smell or taste horrible. Educating them is always better anyway, that hiding all away.

Yes poisonous plants do grow here, but the fact is,most health risks here are of a more insidious nature, sewage in the sea, mozzies carrying disease, sand fly fever,lieshmaniasis....At least you can see a poisonous plant and avoid it............
